9. ‘Earthing of the electric instruments having metallic surface is must.’ How is this measure
be justified ?
Ans: Earth wire provides a low-resistance conducting path for the current. Any leakage of current
flows into the earth, and protects the user from severe electric shock.

16. What is dilution of acids ?
Ans: The process of mixing an acid with water.
17. What could be the pH value of a salt that is commonly used to remove strong oil stains in
any source ? Why ?
Ans: More than 7 (basic in nature) because oil is always acidic in nature. Basic salts emulsify the
oil and form micelles.
18. What is the reason for the formation of water when moderately reactive metals react with
nitric acid ?
Ans: Nitric acid is strong oxidising agent. It oxidises hydrogen produced to water.
19. Though concentrated sulphuric acid is not a reactant during the conversion of ethanol to
ethene, its presence is necessary. Why ?
Ans: Suphuric acid acts as dehydrating agent here and removes H2O.
IX. Answer the following questions : 3×2=6
20. Name the carbon compounds having the following structures.
i)
ii)
iii) iv)
Ethanol Pentyne
21. “Thermite process is useful to join railway tracks.” Why ? Substantiate this statement
with suitable explanation.
Ans: The reaction of iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) with aluminium is highy exothermic and iron is
obtained in molten form.
Fe2O3(s) + 2Al(s) → 2Fe(l) + Al2O3(s) + Heat
OR
Can zinc carbonate and cinnabar ores be converted into their oxides by roasting ? Justify
your answer with reason.
Ans: Zinc carbonate ore is converted into its oxide by calcination not by roasting as it is carbonate
ore. ZnCO3 → ZnO + CO2
Cinnabar ore is converted into its oxide by roasting as it is sulphide ore.
2ZnS + 3O2 → 2 ZnO + 2 SO2
22. Observe the table given below. Answer the given questions :

ii) Predict the formula of potassium oxide with reason.
Ans: K2O – Valency of K is 1 as it belongs to first group and valency of O is 2 as it belongs to 16th
group.
X. Answer the following questions : 3×3=9
23. a) What are saturated carbon compounds ?
Ans: Carbon compound having single bond between carbon atoms.
b) Define the following :
i) Homologous series : A group of members of the same class of organic compounds, where
successive members differ by a –CH2 group is called a homologous series.
ii) Esters : Compound formed by reaction of an acid and an alcohol.
OR
a) What are micelles ?
Ans: The ionic-end of soap interacts with water while the carbon chain interacts with oil and form
structures called micelles.
b) What is covalent bond ? Write any two properties of covalent compounds.
Ans: Chemical bond which is formed by the sharing of electrons between two atoms is known as
covalent bond.
Properties: (i) have low melting points and boiling points.
(ii) generally gaseous or liquids or soft solids.
(iii) are generally insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents.
(iv) They are bad conductors of electricity.
24. Draw the diagram of the arrangement of apparatus to show the action of steam on a metal.

25. In which of the following chemical reactions water insoluble precipitate will be formed ?
Explain. Which water soluble products are formed in both of the reactions ?
i) Barium chloride reacted with sodium sulphate.
ii) Zinc reacted with hydrochloric acid.
Ans: Insoluble precipitate will be formed in chemical reaction one. Sodium sulphate and barium
