Real, inverted and large.

11. Explain the following natural phenomena :

i) Twinkling of stars
Ans: Stars twinkle due to the atmospheric refraction of starlight. The starlight, on entering the
earth’s atmosphere, undergoes refraction continuously before it reaches the earth. Since the stars are
very distant, they approximate point-sized sources of light. The path of rays of light coming from
the star goes on varying slightly, the apparent position of the star fluctuates which results in the
twinkling effect.
ii) Rainbow formation.
Ans: Rainbow is caused by dispersion of sunlight by tiny water droplets in the atmosphere. A
rainbow is always formed in a direction opposite to that of the Sun. The water droplets act like small
prisms. They refract and disperse the incident sunlight, then reflect it internally, and finally refract it
again when it comes out of the raindrop .
OR
a) How does the eye lens accommodate to see the nearby objects and distant objects ? Explain.
Ans: When we are looking at the distant objects ciliary muscles are relaxed, the lens becomes thin,
its focal length increases.
When we are looking at objects closer to the eye, the ciliary muscles contract, the lens becomes
thicker, its focal length decreases.
