Data Center Infrastructure Design – An Introduction

Overview

Benefits of cable management in the data center include:

 Facilitating network administration

• Proper cord routing

 Preventing degradation of transmitted signals

• Alien crosstalk and separation from power cables for copper
• Optical loss for fiber

 Maximizing airflow
• No cable trays in cold aisles
• All floor tile cutouts for cables sealed
• No abandoned cables in pathways
• Cords not blocking equipment air inlets / exhausts

Cable management guidelines

All guidelines for cable management are intended to maintain the performance of the initial installation
and manufacturer ratings / warrantees

Vertical cable managers are recommended for the sides of racks

 250 mm (10 in) wide between adjacent racks

 150 mm (6 in) wide at each end of a row

Avoid harnessing cables or cords in tight bundles

Limit freely suspended cable spans to 1.5 m (5 ft) or less

Minimize equipment / patch cord slack length

Use factory-assembled components to minimize performance variances
