What is a Circular Function?
The graph of the equation x 2 + y 2 = 1 is a circle in the rectangular coordinate
system. This graph is called the unit circle and has its center at the origin and
has a radius of 1 unit. Trigonometric functions are defined so that their domains
are sets of angles and their ranges are sets of real numbers. Circular
functions are defined such that their domains are sets of numbers that
correspond to the measures (in radian units) of the angles of analogous
trigonometric functions. The ranges of these circular functions, like their
analogous trigonometric functions, are sets of real numbers. These functions
are called circular functions because radian measures of angles are determined
by the lengths of arcs of circles. In particular, trigonometric functions defined
using the unit circle lead directly to these circular functions.
How are circular function
applied in real life?
Circular trigonometric functions can be
applied to situations in physical,
biological, and social sciences involving
data that follows a pattern that is not
linear. Many of those patterns are
periodic, and can be modeled by
approximations of sine, cosine, or other
functions
Health
● Circular Function is used in Orthopedics to
find the deviation of a vertebra in degrees
and know if the nerves are damaged.
● It is also used to mold prosthetic arms and
legs that measurements are tailored to allow
cooperation close to the original member.
Examples:
How a doctor can heal a broken bone by
correcting it with surgery and a cast and
also using circular function.
Meteorology
Long-term averages: (top graph, below)
The model for the long-term averages is y = 4.2cos ((x - 1)π/6) + 13.7
B = 2π/12
The long-term average reduces the impact of one-off, very extreme events. The climate model does not fit this data as well
because of random climate variability.
To find when the temperature will exceed 14°C, substitute 14 for y in the equation.
(x - 1)π/6 = 1.4993
x - 1 = 2.8635
i.e. the temperature will be above 14°C from the end of April to early October.
Meteorologist
Meteorologists launch weather balloons filled with hydrogen in the air to measure
the wind, temperature and humidity up to nearly 100,000 feet. The balloon rises at
1000 feet per minute, and Meteorologists calculate the angle above the ground and
the angle that relates to the north/south and east/west movement of the balloon,
also they know it is the wind that is making the balloon move, so if they know the
time, and angles, they can calculate what the winds had to be in order to make the
balloon move there. That is a trigonometry problem, that Meteorologists use many
times per day.
Music in Trigonometry
Trigonometry is used in measuring the level or
pitch of a sound wave or musical note. These
notes are measured in hertz. People can use
panels in rooms such as studios and turn them in
different angles so that the music waves bounce
off just right to make the song sound smooth and
even.
In the following equation which is used to describe the mathematical part to
the use of a microphone (t) is time, (A) is amplitude, and (w) is frequency.
• f(t) = A sin(2 pi w t)
• Music & Trigonometry
• Megan Long
• Panels found in Studios
• Engineering Building For Musical Purposes
Engineers use trigonometry in Concert areas, rooms or other places that
are made for the production and use of music so that the sounds are
transferred and bounce off of the walls to make the sounds balanced and
easy to hear.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
● Fuel consumption is the inverse of fuel economy. It is the amount of fuel consumed in
driving a given distance. It is measured in the United States in gallons per 100 miles,
·
and in liters per 100 kilometers in Europe and elsewhere throughout the world. Fuel
consumption is a fundamental engineering measure that is directly related to fuel
consumed per 100 miles and is useful because it can be employed as a direct
measure of volumetric fuel savings. It is actually fuel consumption.
Relationship between fuel consumption
(FC) and fuel economy (FE) illustrating
the decreasing reward of improving fuel
economy (miles per gallon [mpg]) for
high-mile-per-gallon vehicles. The width
of each rectangle represents a 50
percent decrease in FC or a 100 percent
increase in FE. The number within the
rectangle is the decrease in FC per 100
miles, and the number to the right of the
rectangle is the total fuel saved over
10,000 miles by the corresponding 50
percent decrease in FC.
• Percent decrease in fuel
consumption (FC) as a function
of percent increase in fuel
economy (FE), illustrating the
decreasing benefit of improving
the fuel economy of vehicles
with an already high fuel
economy.
The data were converted to fuel consumption, using the curve of either
Figure 2.1 or 2.2 for changes in fuel economy. Because of this, the
committee recommends that the fuel economy information sticker on new
cars and trucks should include fuel consumption data in addition to the fuel
economy data so that consumers can be familiar with this fundamental
metric since fuel consumption difference between two vehicles relates
directly to fuel savings. The fuel consumption metric is also more directly
related to overall emissions of carbon dioxide than is the fuel economy
metric.
Amusement Park
Why is Trigonometry used in
amusement rides?
• It allows engineer to design a thrilling
yet safe rides.
• The forces exerted from the ride can be
calculated and monitored.
• Using the graphs to analyze ride
information and feedback.

The height at a certain time stays
constant, so there is a sinusoidal sine
graph.
If one rotation is one ride, one rotation is
the period of the graph.
the amount of periods in one day can be
calculated so the number of rides per day
and rides per hour can be calculated.
