Teacher pay raise bills in Mississippi die in committee

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Bills that would have resulted in a pay raise for teachers in Mississippi died in committee.
On Tuesday, the House and Senate Education Committees did not meet on the deadline day, resulting in multiple pay raise bills, like House Bill 1126, and other bills not being funded.
HB 1126 passed the House on February 4, but died in the Senate.
The bill would have provided a $5,000 raise for all teachers and teacher assistants, and a $3,000 annual salary increase to licensed special education teachers.
Another pay raise bill, Senate Bill 2001, passed through the Senate on January 7, but died in the House.
This bill would have given teachers a $2,000 raise.
House Bill 2, commonly known as the school choice bill, narrowly passed the House with a 61-59 vote on January 15, but was killed by the Senate on February 4.
Senate Bill 2099, a bill that would have prohibited the use of cell phones or restricted cell phone possession by students in class, also died.
Over 30 education bills died on Tuesday.
