I think there are 3 main ways to use JRuby from Java/Scala:

Use JSR 223: Suitable for simple Ruby script loading.
Use JRuby API (http://jruby.org/apidocs/index.html): Most powerful, full control.
Write interface in Java/Scala, and implement it in JRuby (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5207681/implementing-a-java-interface-on-the-jruby-generated-class-java-file): Very convenient. I think this should be used most of the time.

I haven't tried BSF (mentioned at https://github.com/jruby/jruby/wiki/RedBridge). It seems for older Java (1.4).
