Uninsurable - not just nuclear, but also unsinsurable literally•The trillion dollar question about the climate repricing of homesEnglish
2·3 months agoThat’s the logic for the individualist. The strategy, common in finance, is to find a fool to sell to.
The other strategy is to call for solidarity and revolution, and understand that “home ownership” is bourgeois.
I saw this when you posted it, but the wall of text hit me as I rarely check on the Lemmy.world instance.
https://climatehealers.org/contact-2/contact-us/ send it to them :) they should indeed update it.
The web archive link for the book doesn’t work now, but the source link does.

Earthlings in the Capitalocene•Lemurs in Madagascar Face an Unexpected KillerEnglish
1·5 months agoThey’re showing up on dinner plates, served with rice and a side, in cities as much as 120 miles from their home forests. Almost 95 percent of the lemurs in the study were sold directly to clients. The rest were sold to restaurants or to middlemen who sold them to restaurants.
“They would be consumed as a special treat at home or for a special occasion out at a restaurant, depending on lemur availability,” Dr. Borgerson said. They’re a status symbol that costs more than three times as much as beef, she says, and they are sometimes eaten for unproven medicinal benefits.
“We are really surprised,” said Max Andonirina Fontaine, who served as Madagascar’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development until the country’s government dissolved in September. “It’s not an issue raised before.” In an interview days before the government collapsed, he said that the authorities intended to investigate the practice.

vegan•"Farmers" Fight Federal Efforts to Block States from Promoting Humane Animal AgricultureEnglish
1·6 months agoWhile it sounds contradictory, it’s very simple.
The small players like “family farms” can not compete with the big corporations. The strategy for the small players has shifted to more “added value labels” like organic, local, free range etc. That label allows them to justify, on the market, much higher prices for the product. In reality, it’s mostly bullshit, especially when it comes to animal farming.
Big players can also engage in this humanewashing and ethicswashing, but they don’t put enough effort in it and usually try to redefine the standards/regulations instead, which is easier. They basically give the game away, demonstrating that it’s bullshit.
Remember, welfarism is a dead end. Animal-welfare-labelled meat is not a stepping stone to animal-free diets: empirical evidence from a survey: Journal of Environmental Economics and Policy: Vol 14 , No 1 - Get Access.

Earthlings in the Capitalocene•Unequal exchange is not primarily about monetary valueEnglish
1·8 months agoEngineering knowledge is, of course, a necessary condition for advanced technology, but it is not a sufficient condition. Instead of assuming that, once invented, these technologies “exist” in some abstract sense and that their material provisioning is another problem, we find that modern technologies in their very essence are means of appropriation and thus distributive phenomena. To apply Marxist terminology, we can say that a nation’s “productive forces” are contingent on global “relations of production”. Indeed, rather than absolving capital from exploitation once it is invested in machinery, we can conclude that technology is capital.
That last part seems difficult to grasp for many who subscribe to the left.

Well, there you go. Jobs don’t have to be for trapping and killing animals.
