Change of plans

©2019 Barry Smith - Inspirational leaf - love - about 7cm long
I had planned to rivet the big sculptural books today; but there was a change of plan. I had a request for silver-plated leaves with the word kindness stamped into them. I did not have these leaves in stock. So the day was spent on fold formed metal leaves. I not only made a stash of those requested; but decided to make some small love and hope leaves for giving away.

With good planning and careful cutting I managed to get quite a few leaf related blanks out of a biggish silver-plated copper serving tray.

After many steps the bright leaves emerged. Some outcomes of the steps below.

Today was one of the first Fridays in a long time that I have managed to spend most of the day in the studio-garage - a satisfying feeling.

Post installation and progress on a compassion commission

A significant amount of time over the weekend was spent working on drainage and finishing a set of steps around the concrete water tank.

I did manage to work with Fiona on finishing a weathered and rust post; and installing it at the top of the tank stairs.

And I found a couple of hours to start a small commission on compassion. The Thich Nhat Hanh quote on compassion (Compassion is a verb.) is to be stamped on a larger brass leaf similar to the pages in my unbound book on compassion. It is be gifted to a person who is helping another through a time of grief. I have decided to make two versions: the brass one as requested; and also a trio of leaf forms that includes the quote but also the words kindness and gentleness.

I'm always moved when folk commission leaf words in times of grief or illness - I think the words and the acts of giving can be very powerful.

The power of leaves

Over the weekend I intended to complete a few more Artisan Lamps. However Fiona and I attended the opening of the Maleny Print Makers exhibition; and I was reminded that I had committed to giving a fellow artist Peace Leaves for International Peace Day. I knew that I needed to fulfil that commitment before I got on to the lamps. At the exhibition I was also reminded of the sad story of a woman whose baby daughter died about 12 months ago. I felt I wanted to gift her a few leaves to offer energy and hope.

So I got stuck into making the Peace Leaves; and Leaves of Hope and Healing. The Peace Leaves are about 9cm long; and the Leaves of Hope  and Healing are about 13cm long. I always feel that the process of making gives me the opportunity to imbue the metal forms with a little positive energy.

After all the cutting, folding, hammering and opening it was off to the grinding and polishing bench to let the beauty of the metal and words shine.

The outcome was good - so I hope that these small leaves can carry a bit of power.

I did get to do some work on Artisan Lamps; but that will be progressed during the week if time permits.
