95 Open Tabs’ second release is produced by talented artist RM Estali, a figure to be reckoned with in the French scene.

With an admirable ability for compostion, he demonstrated his sound design skills on the debut EP “Dynamic Slicing” recently released on Virtual Forest, as well as on their VA “No Digging After Midnight”. He continues now with a somewhat grittier four-track-EP, where powerful basslines are continuously supported by organic and deep textures, in a sort of agreement between dubstep, drum and bass and downtempo: the Purple Codes.

You’re first dropped into a stream of swirling sounds that inevitably flows towards the official entry: Parcleys Arena. Here, some angry animal repeatedly traverses space, summoning unexpected whiplash-like synths and trancy hits in the process. All throughout, the underlying electric power line pushes you forward, while warm acoustic percussion takes you by the hand to guide you to the other end of this menacing playground.

The next step is Reboot, where incisive hat grooves and biting snare hits oversee a rough conversation: an aggressive voice from the underground attempts to take the lead on a powerful FM entity that’s determined to defend itself. While these protagonists continuously morph to challenge each other, the sonic landscape fills with secondary players: at times steady rhythms that seek to regulate the dialog, at other times out-of-control energetic bursts that only want to add more to the chaos.

Moving on, 32gr is a strange tunnel that invites you to dispose of any unnecessary weight you might be carrying. With bright metallic drum layers sparkling above a strong harmonic carpet, a team of sharp airy breaks and round basses attempt to spark momentum by continuously reshaping space. Without warning, roaring engines are launched to announce a more drastic acceleration phase that will lift the musical space off the ground, inviting all elements to get progressively more energized towards the end of the trip.

Destination reached, Phase Four is the place to rest. A soothing wind is telling everyone to calm down: from now on, slapping bass riffs work hand-in-hand with playful drums to provide a confident sound-stage, allowing more melodic elements to step into the light. Hidden in the background, a shy electric snake-like synth meanders in-between the sonic layers, only revealing itself fully over the warmth of the final chords.
