there was already distance wide as the sky but i liked to know you were in it why did you have to die? a broken wing that you couldn't mend i wish i could've gave you medicine how much of our lives did we spend side by side? playing with pocket knives carving out our space in life afternoons spent wrestling couches together to form a ring we traded up for instruments sold our soul it was common sense i don't know if the devil remembers but our laughter will echo on forever a few of your favorite clothes from your high school wardrobe are the closest thing to having you back i don't want your memories they're too constrictive but the clothes still fit how much of our lives did we spend kicking out the jams? i wish you were wrestling with me i never considered running out of time i see you now in a different light one that always shines and helps me sleep at night knowing that when we had the chance we did it right i wish you were wrestling with me

you can carve your name into a tree that don’t mean you own it land of the free everything is free when you steal it no mountainside can conceal 500 years of american nightmares nothing could be worse than putting it where it hurts the most i don’t buy it for a second you tried to instill pride and this is who you chose slave owners and indian killers in the shadows of the hills that are black a white lie has gone too far and now it’s time to give it back taught in school like a thing of the past but they never left listen to the sound of the drums over the mountains you can hear ‘em listen to the sound of the drums you can hear ‘em getting nearer primetime evening news covers the spectacular fireworks red white & blue covers everything it can reach and we get down on our knees every chance we get to worship shameless faces in high places

i’d rather imagine myself nowhere, there’s nowhere i’d rather be than away from my mind nothing but clutter i know what’s mine head on tight it’s time to walk inside first steps feel harder for the second time everything in pieces i know what’s mine i’m smoking outside exhaling my whole life where the light ain’t so harsh i can try to talk myself out of it but you still know how to dance so you don’t take no for an answer you still know how to dance so you damn well don’t take no for an answer i know what’s mine i can’t let ‘em know i’m not fine

without oxygen a spark does nothing to become what everybody wants you gotta leave room to breathe don’t look at me without curt expression the only thing more helpful than a deadline is an extension turn it on its back maybe it’s the task that keeps my distractions on track a sophisticated use of cadence and a little patience can make sense of all the waiting concentration is harder on art than it is on the artist hallucinating is easy but once you come in contact there’s no turning back overworking a prediction leads to obscurity and now it’s science fiction can’t tell a forest from the trees can’t tell the breeze about ambition it’ll move you eventually

i’m trying not to have a thought but not having much luck I can’t shake ‘em they keep catching up they seem to me suspiciously peripheral i’m a sucker for a reliable surprise must be why i’m always changing my mind the first scent of blood and out come the wolves i’m talking over myself again attack regrets with eagle’s talons impress your new friends with your hidden talents there is no i in Algernon and i am trying not to have a goddam thought i’m talking over myself again i know i’m lost and i know it’s always in the last place i’m talking over myself again i’m trying not to get caught in the backwash of an artificial world constructed by bloodsucking motherfuckers in an anti-social coliseum pretentions and expectations imposed to manifest a status quo i don’t need a kaleidoscope to see the patterns of toxicity we are radiators hissing in unison fever pitch is our new national anthem

you’re confused the tv and the movies really did a number on you you’re confused the tv and the news really did a number on you and you’re ready all too ready ready to accept that this is the way it’s always been and so it must not be broke it’s working so long and we’ve made it this far oh what a marvelous invention that can capture your attention and once it starts to move you it starts all over they’ll remind you that you disagree with crime and who will you call when it finds you once the bruises start showing up they’re harder to hide how will you protect your eyes and keep your kids safe from the truth the system isn’t broken it’s working the way it’s supposed to you think you can turn it on and turn it off you keep turning oh what a marvelous invention that can capture your attention and once they start to lose you it starts all over they’ll tell you that it’s just one bad apple and there’s no such thing as free lunch no matter how many times they prove themselves to be the bully you’ll stand behind them so you won’t be the one whose hit you won’t be the one whose bones get broken

i know this town like the back of my hand i know how to get lost ‘cause that’s where i am far from the picture that’s been painted even in a good light it’s a shallow interpretation it takes a gaslit nation to stand behind the crimes coming out of our paycheck and meanwhile wonder when your dreams will make it out of bed it seems so hard to make things happen i can sympathize with a suicide you know we’re living through a functioning crisis self-destruction lights a fire but my hands are megaphones pointed at the sky ‘cause spite burns brighter don’t matter your social status or where you came from we’re all living under someone else’ thumb compartmentalizing our freedom as means of production hostages for someone else’ profits never trust a president never trust a nation don’t assume your teachers’ right do your own education history is a record and it’s never an accident when you find out what no one ever told you it will unfold into the truth i hate the usa in particular on performative holidays it’s time to pay up and quit praying to the flag and calling it values my hands are megaphones how are we still drowning in overflowing wealth pitting one and all against everybody else my hands are megaphones pointed at the sky my hands are megaphones

million dollars that’s a lotta money what is it good for maybe it could make a difference maybe change the course of history or become a monumental failure we’ve got a real problem ‘round here how we gonna solve it? well frank here just had a brilliant idea spend a million bucks on rocks solely to keep people from sleeping out of the rain under the freeway what a perverse thought what an abstract way to express your disdain a million in rocks to eliminate negative space they sure are keeping portland weird these days those rocks were really big we should have dropped them on your head whatever spills out split evenly between the other rats are you proud to see them in action? when you drive on by no one staying dry does it make you feel good? does it make you feel like a million bucks?

World Of Difference

|

|
i feel like i got stoned it feels nice to live alone pull up outside of anywhere that looks hospitable i’m home saw some other folks around the way getting hassled for their poverty it makes me feel like singing acab one day you’ll get what’s coming i felt the freedom of being free from rent and felt the burden of needing a place to take a shit it’s not quite glamorous and i’m not quite homeless but what you start to notice it’s not a world of difference do we need permission to exist or do we just need to afford it? if it’s a one way street i’d rather be off the beaten path it’s not a world of difference
