  1. On the Promise of the Moon
    by REEKING AURA
Chonk with flair, a masterful and surprisingly melodious release, blending brutality with accessibility. Catchy riffs and structures in which absolutely subterranean vox meet icy tremolos, dissonant chords, and NYC swagger. Let's get rowdy, y'all.
  2. Devoid Of Thought
    by Devoid Of Thought
The hypnotism of early Oranssi Pazuzu, the irreverence of Orbweaver (deep cut, I know), and the filthiness of Chthe'ilist except spilled out in broad daylight. Yknow... it sounds just like the album art.
  3. Breaking The Catatonic State
    by Crouch
I want to punch things in 7. Or wait, maybe 5. Is that 6 now? Shiiit. I'm flailing wildly and it feels so good.
  4. Blind in Abyssal Realms
    by Ordh
Filthy AND progressive?? You've got my attention. This album has some of the most thoughtful and mature songwriting I've heard in a long time - excellent attention to detail, and a satisfying arc. Very, very good.
  5. New World
    by DEADTREES
Gorgeous post-rock that has clear roots in black metal - massive dynamics without losing the heavy edge, lush instrumentation, haunting strings and soulful sax... perfection!
  6. Under The Under
    by Growth
An outstanding balance of technicality and accessibility. Gut punches of filthy chonk come swinging out of the blue, and hit with a ferocity that continues to surprise till the very end. Masterful mindfuckery - unpredictable and meandering rhythms haul the listener along on a journey that, bolstered by emotive vox, flawlessly mirrors the emotional premise of the album.
  7. THE BPM
    by Sudan Archives
It's not metal (gasp!) but this is artistry that I fully appreciate - completely unfettered, charting her own path, and delightfully unpredictable without losing accessibility. A really enjoyable record.
  8. Reverie
    by bunsenburner
Came for the album art, stayed for the outstanding songs. Glorious synth layers on top of highly nuanced and detailed instru-prog that never feels noodly or directionless. Simple ideas morph into mountains of inevitability, perfect pacing, infectious grooves, and rich production - this one's a winner!

  14. I KNOW HOW YOU WILL DIE
    by Snooze
Just gorgeous! Lush, raw, and emotive, careening from comfy gazey porch-hangs to anguished blastbeats and percussive mathy chaos. Tons of variety and perfect pacing. Layer upon layer of guileless lyricism are smeared onto the mix until the jagged shards of its sincerity rip you open and leave you bleeding. Wowee.
  15. Beyond Obsidian Euphoria
    by Tómarúm
Technical, epic, emotional, and unafraid to push boundaries. Opethian techdeath with symphonic synths and a grandiose air. Good shit.
  16. The Diseased Machine
    by Mutagenic Host
  17. Psalmus Mortis
    by Retromorphosis
OH HECK YES. This is as satisfying as I could have possibly hoped for. Rebranded, but true to form, this a fucking flawless follow-up to 2012's Incurso - chonky skronky techdeath full of blistering riffs, divebombing solos, and relentless Abodement. Tasteful and modernized synth layers sprinkled into the unyielding fury add grandeur, while eerie and improbable melodies wrest your attention and pummel it to pieces. FUCKING GLORIOUS! \m/
  18. Elegy
    by Burning Palace
THIS RIFFS! This leans into some of Ulcerate's angular chords and chaotic drums, but heavily filtered through a pure death metal lens. Dissodeath happened, so let's take it back to its roots. It's fun, aggressive, chunky, and engaging throughout. Fuck yeah!
