 LOOKING AHEAD...

Yes, indeed...today, I bought "a few" bulbs for Spring colour and perfume. I did search on-line for some old favourites, but I think I was a little tardy and all the nurseries I checked were "out of stock."

Ah, well, maybe I'll be lucky next year. What's that?  You want to know what I couldn't find? Freesia "Burtonii." Not so easy to find (although I'd bet the house-keeping budget that canny gardeners  have been growing these treasures for generations!)

I shan't whinge, but it's a great loss to many that they are so hard to find, having been pushed out by newer colours with longer, straighter stems.

But today I bought (for starters) Hyacinths, 2 of each in white, yellow and blue. And bag of mixed double daffodils. And, because I still had a few shekels and my eye had said "buy!" I also got an Angelonia in a glorious dark purple.

These pictures are from the Web, obviously! But I do hope I'll have some stunning images to show you in a few months!

We drove across the highway to do some other shopping this morning and I made a mental note to take a camera next time, as most trees are beginning to show the season's colour change.. The oaks across the lane from our house are yellowing and I think I saw a liquidamber this morning. And the giant magnolias still have big cream flowers, but I notice a lot are seeding.Might need to wear a pith helmet...

                                          Again, from the web.
                                               Liquiamber

And one day last week we took a ferry ride across the Waitemata Harbour to Hobsonville to visit The Man's cousin. What a fabulous catch-up! We swapped old stories and laughed a lot and agreed that we must keep in touch. So, lunch at ours next time.

And that's about all I have time for.

I think I may have missed the right bulb planting time here, so I guess we'll just have to hope our poppies flourish this year. It's just been so strangely hot for March. xoxo

It sounds like you're going to have plenty of Spring colour for the Garden Photos Event later in the year!

My Tulips are just about to bloom! I shan't let them drown, like they did last year.
I do like a Hyacinth!

I LOVE Angelonia or Delphiniums as they are called here. Probably one of my favorites. I have about four plants of them now. I love this time of year...the most exciting in nature I think. All my bulbs are now sprouting.

Mr Device...I hadn't even thought about that! I'd better make sure all cameras are up to standard.

Maddie...Angelonias are not called Delphinium, but in USA they are known as "summer snapdragon" or 'angel flower" Who cares! They flower for ages and are so easy to propagate...

The freesia is just lovely. Don't settle for less. You need to grow that! The liquidambar is stunning too with its leaves all golden. NICE!

...no honestly I've just gone and looked up the liquidambar tree and my God what a stunner!

This comment thread is rather difficult to follow, but here I am, late to the garden party...

Bulbs are the best investment one can make when the season turns dismal - but it's a shame you were too late for the Freesia (such a glorious scent!). There are, however, loads of alternatives to choose from, I'm sure.

I'm not familiar with Angelonia, but I agree, they're certainly not Delphiniums! The former is related to Penstemon, Antirrhinum, Veronica and Digitalis (Foxgloves), whereas the latter is in the same family as Ranunculus (Buttercups), Thalictrum, Aquilegia, Anemones, Hellebores and even Clematis.

Happy Autumn, Dinah! I am much happier in Spring. Jx

Thanks for the added "family tree" of those plants.
Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons, but hey! I can find something to love in all 4! And I saw red berries on a tree the other day, but not sure exactly where it was. That might become today's exercise...a good long walk to re-discover it!
