4·11 months agoOmgaaaauuuuhghhd bruuuhhh, one group was shitty and wouldn’t take a firm stance against Israel bc they didn’t have a fucking backbone. They’re shitty people that need to step down. They are not essentially the same.
The group you’re comparing them to:
•has said they wanted to bomb Gaza into oblivion and build a resort.
•are currently snatching students who attended pro-palestenian protests off of U.S. streets and shipping them to detention centers hundreds of miles away, (these detention centers are located in my own state in the desolate middle of nowhere, where even lawyers are afraid to even go protest because of threats of harm or being disappeared)
•are dismantling 3 civil rights offices for getting in the way of their immigration policies, one exists to provide benefits to refugees, one that exists to investigate claims of inhumane treatment in those detention center, and the third isn’t even focused on immigration, it exists to protect civil rights and liberties for all Americans dealing with DHS agencies and had to be created after the patriot act was passed by Republicans following 9/11 and too many rights were being violated
•have repeatedly openly ignored and publicly joked about just tossing due process, which is a constitutional right that anyone in this country is supposed to be entitled to, regardless of citizenship. When asked a little over a week ago if he needed to uphold the constitution, Trump said he didn’t know. Not like a joke. He really didn’t know if that was something he would be expected to comply with as president, as long as his lawyers told him he could ignore it.

3·11 months agoNot sure if you actually read that, but the modern Republican vs Democrat political parties have very likely been intentionally polarized and turned into what they are today because of the Heritage Foundation, in order to destroy democracy and create an oligarchy.
I am not a fan of the DNC, but again it’s blatantly false to claim the actions of shitty individuals in the DNC are representative of all liberal values. Calling them slightly more benevolent when in power is either an extremely misinformed opinion or a blatant attempt to spread disinformation.
Over the last 4 months (starting literally on Jan 21) I have personally watched the polarized GOP take a literal sledgehammer to publicly funded programs in science and healthcare that (while imperfect) did an extraordinary amount of good for everyday Americans. The amount of damage done to individuals in my state who were dependent on Medicaid (some were patients in the free clinic where I volunteer and some were my own family members) is appalling and inexcusable.
I hope anyone that reads your comment will not be misinformed. I’m sorry if it wasn’t your intention, but (even putting aside losing my own job in science) this is something I’ve watched unnecessarily hurt so many people around me, as healthcare systems begin to ramp down acceptance of Medicaid in preparation for cuts that the Republicans said over and over weren’t going to happen. That was bullshit, and your description, is bullshit.
An imperfect system of very basic benefits is being made even worse in order to justify a tax cut (in addition to the billions that were already stolen via “DOGE” savings) for people who already take so much, and don’t contribute their fair share to society while leeching off corporate welfare and accusing people relying on those benefits of being the leeches. “Slightly more benevolent,” is an ignorant and dangerous way to describe imperfect but expanded access to healthcare vs the the passive aggressive genocide of undesirable populations through Mediciad cuts that are only necessary to benefit the wealthy who have taken so much more than what they have contributed.

5·11 months agoI don’t have time to argue bc I have to go to my publicly funded job soon that’s about to be gone because of Republicans, but as a civil libertarian I can tell you that’s a completely BS argument.
If you’d like to read about privatized corporate government maybe check out this information on the Heritage Foundation and their role creating a “free market” in post Soviet Russia
Here you go:
Here is some info about the Heritage Foundation and the first go-between for US and Russia businesses
Here is some information about how right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel has been involved in Trump’s privatization of unethical AI since at least 2017
It seems like a lot of the stuff being blamed on Elon Musk was actually Theil’s idea, he was just smart enough to be quiet about it and let Elon be the face of taking a chainsaw to government bureaucracy (and consequently any publicly funded goods and services).

15·11 months agoWhy is it on a liberal private business owner to provide a public bathroom? This just seems like the myth people use to show why liberalism is either phony or unsustainable.
It should be on the local government/community to provide public options.

3·11 months agoI know dude this is fucking ridiculous. I’m working on writing a longer blog post about all of this right now. Just to be clear, I’m absolutely positive he does not mean creating trust of citizens/civillians.
He means how does he get private companies, military, or police in other countries to ignore or find loopholes that will allow them to purchase the mass surveillance technology Peter Theil invested in during the first Trump administration and unleashed on law enforcement agencies in the U.S.
I know that they never actually had any sort of ideological stake (bc they never do for any of these issues) when they hijacked the libertarian ideals of “small government,” but I also think that if there is a way to get (at least some) of the Americans (and other countries somehow still thinking this might be fun to try) that somehow don’t see that, it’s through exposing this kind of bullshit.
Those angry farmers in Iowa yelling at Chuck Grassly about that “feller in El Salvador” give me some miniscule hope that even if we can’t stop these people, we can still turn more Americans against them before they turn us all against each other.

2·1 year agoOk so I keep telling people if nothing else good comes from this shit year, 2025 was the year I learned to appreciate the value of a good home made soup. So, I am so excited to see this post!
I use vegetable better than bullion base, chop a big club of ginger in a food processor then add it to the base, add in 2-3 jalapenos, key lime juice, and Sriracha
While all that’s simmering, I sautee red onion, broccoli, and shrimp, then add all that to the soup and let it simmer together for a while. Sometimes I’ll add tofu. Usually eat that for a few days. It’s awesome especially when you’re sick.

2·1 year agoThese people aren’t even giving us the minor concessions. They’re actively taking away the shit that we are more than entitled to and exploiting us at every opportunity while reassuring the people that somehow still don’t see the truth that eventually there will be a big pay off for their continued loyalty.
It’s like just sit and wait patiently in this burning building. I’ll be back to rescue you eventually. I understand it’s getting hot, it’s a little uncomfortable for all of us right now. I know you want oxygen, but I NEED this oxygen mask so I can save us all from the fire I started by fucking around with these matches.

10·1 year agoSometimes I volunteer at a homeless shelter. I’ll never forget this one dude with mobility issues that kept asking me to do things like find out if he had an appointment scheduled with a doctor, and if I told him he could just look online and find the information he would always say ok then come back and ask me to do the same thing again the next time I saw him.
Finally he admitted to me he didn’t know how to read, so even things that we usually think of as simple like just look up contact information for places online to call and ask was impossible for him to do.
I was able to help him get some things taken care of and I learned that he had been helping somebody work on a car and the jack had broken and crushed his hip while he was under there.
He’d lost everything and ended up homeless, and since he had mobility issues following the accident, not being able to read and get things taken care of just caused even more issues. Things had just kind of spiraled out of control from there and he’d gotten kind of stuck in the situation
I took time one morning to help him take care of a bunch of things. We were able to call his pharmacy and figure out the reason he hadn’t been getting his prescriptions was bc they were waiting to hear back from him. I helped him get set up with PT so he could work on his mobility issues, and then I found the number for a transportation service to help him drive to PT.
He left the shelter eventually, so I’m not sure what ultimately ended up happening, but the point is he had been stuck like that for over a year feeling like he was spinning his wheels and going nowhere.
He was just one person among so many that needed just a little help with something we all take for granted. Just think about how many people are in similar situations and dealing with so much more than we can visibly see.

3·1 year agoI know, right as Musk is “backing away” from his role aiding the president.
Almost makes you wonder if that whole Trainwreck was in part a distraction so we would let our guards down with him gone. I feel like even if Musk does actually step away, Theil has had Trump’s ear since his first term when he picked several people to serve in his science cabinet including Kratsios. I am not 100% sure on this, but I also suspect he was likely involved in getting Trump to pick Vance as VP.
I do know that Yarvin was a mentor to both Vance and Theil and the three have been close for a long time. It’s an odd group and weird as hell to imagine being stuck in a room with those 3, but somehow their friendship has lasted.
Also a reason none of us should breathe a sigh of relief of Trump ever decides to step away from the presidency. Trump is a toddler with an automatic weapon, Vance is Patrick Bateman with a Sniper rifle and some very scary connections to not just Yarvin and Theil, but also people like Adrian Vermeule.

Fediverse vs Disinformation@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Florida Lawmakers Proposed Bill to "Liberate FEMA" would Help Dept. of Homeland Security to Dismantle Office of Civil Rights if PassedEnglish
2·1 year agoLiterally every reference is cited in the post as always, but just to offer the transparency these people claim to love but always avoid:
Office of Homeland Security is making cuts to Civil Rights Offices within the agency for getting in the way on immigration issues. Except the 3 offices being cut are the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (OCRL), the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman, and the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman.
The OCRL is in charge of all civil rights under Dept. homeland security, not just immigrants. If an American citizen gets detained by homeland security, this is the office that makes sure your rights don’t get violated while in custody and if they do, this is the office you have to go through for FOIA request to document you were even in custody. https://federalnewsnetwork.com/workforce/2025/03/homeland-security-makes-cuts-to-offices-overseeing-civil-rights-protections/
However, even with that cut, there is still a civil rights division within the FEMA Office https://www.dhs.gov/office-civil-rights-and-civil-liberties
https://www.fema.gov/about/offices/civil-rights
On the same day the Florida Reps proposed bill was announced to “liberate FEMA”, the secretary of DHS also announced during a live broadcast that DHS was getting rid of FEMA.
https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5213057-noem-plans-eliminate-fema/
Under the bill, FEMA would be led by a Senate-confirmed director who would answer to the president as a cabinet member instead of being an agency within the Dept. Of Homeland Security.
This would mean DHS makes cuts to it’s main civil rights office and loses the fema branch that handles civil rights under national emergencies.
Meanwhile, DHS, DOD, and DOJ have all announced that they plan to start using polygraphs to smoke out employees leaking information to the press and plan to hand people over to legal authorities if the polygraph leads to finding out sensitive information was leaked, even though polygraphs are not admissible in court. You know, like a violation of due process.
Meanwhile, in the executive power loving state of Louisiana, the governor announced the day before the Pentagon announced they plan to violate due process rights that the state of Louisiana office of Homeland security and emergency planning would now be shifted to be completely controlled by the national guard.
If FEMA is no longer an agency, that means that they do not have the authority to go to a state to aid in anyway without the president’s say so. That means that in Louisiana if there is a national disaster like oh idk a fucking hurricane, there is no longer a federal agency making sure the state national guard doesn’t violate civil rights.
If you’ve ever had the privilege of feeling uneasy seeing tanks rolling down your street and armed guardsmen standing in front of grocery stores during a time when you knew you still had a civil rights office to enforce your rights, then you hopefully understand why this is fucking scary to imagine martial law without any branch of government able protect your civil rights

That is like the weirdest attempt at an argument I’ve ever heard. Somehow we have to make even this stupid fucking discussion about trans people and bathrooms bc apparently that is all some people obsess about. JFC.
Do you let every stranger that asks to use your bathroom, use your bathroom? No.
Do you let people who are guests in your house use your bathroom? Yes.
Would a customer be the equivalent of a guest in a business? Yes.
Do you consider trans people to be humans like anyone else? Yes.
Simple. Mind fucking blown. 🤯
