World News•More Americans are moving to Central and Eastern Europe. Here’s why
10·8 days agoJust as a word of advice, don’t use slurs from another cultures. You know the slurs you shouldn’t say in your culture, and I promise you sound just as ignorant and bigoted using the slurs you don’t understand. The “I’m not racist but” introduction did not help here.
Everything is politics. Avoiding thinking about or discussing consequential things is a political position which is well served almost everywhere else on the internet.

Memes of Production@quokk.au•support sex workersEnglish
8·22 days agoSupport independent consenting sex workers only. Do not support human trafficking. I know it’s a bummer but the reality has to be acknowledged and some people need to be protected. I hope the former category can eventually eliminate the demand for the latter category which can only happen if the work is de-stigmatized.

Technology•The US government just banned consumer routers made outside the US
2·24 days agoI’m in a US state with a submissive to authority government. As of today it’s still giving me an “unable to connect” page.

3·26 days agoYesterday the site and its mirrors redirected to an eero page saying it was blocked because it was “dangerous.” Today it was a more general couldn’t connect page.

ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•It just doesn't stopEnglish
2·27 days agoYou know how thinking gets exhausting after a while and it’s frustrating because your brain won’t stop even when you’re already tired? People without adhd don’t have this issue because they choose when to have a train of thought and they stop when it gets too hard. We can’t choose.
Americans have some of the best access to information on the planet. Americans aren’t stupid or ignorant, we’re performers. That’s why you give those friendly sounding Americans the benefit of the doubt. All those conservatives playing innocent like they don’t know exactly what they did are definitely enthralled, but a big part of it is manipulating others’ perception of them so they’re treated like innocent children who can’t be held responsible for their decisions. A lot of them even believe their own performance and free themselves from all accountability even from themselves. I’ve lived around conservatives for a long time. The only way to be an American conservative is to live exclusively in bad faith.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Huge study finds no evidence cannabis helps anxiety, depression, or PTSDEnglish
6·28 days agoThere aren’t any drugs that resolve anxiety, depression, or ptsd on your behalf with nothing else. The most any drug can do is reduce feeling these things while they’re active so that the causes of the feelings may be addressed with lifestyle and cognitive changes.
Drugs are a temporary shelter from the raging storm of these issues while you re-build or build up in the first place a real shelter to experience the world from in peace and comfort. The temporary shelter blows away when the drugs wear off, and to rely on a temporary shelter permanently is no solution. That being said, plenty of people without any shelter at all don’t survive. Drugs help, but they don’t fix the problems they provide temporary relief from, you must solve those problems.
Like the study said, there needs to be more specific research in a controlled environment of these substances being used in coordination with established therapies and procedures. I have personal anecdotal experience of positive outcomes with cannabis in a robust framework addressing these issues beyond chemical means. Importantly, I may not have survived without the option to put the overwhelming desire to opt out of this planet on hold for a few hours at a time by briefly regaining my ability to feel pleasure. My psych wanted to try ketamine for this purpose, but I’m a lot more comfortable with cannabis.

Chat•Please stop speaking favorably of Tucker Carlson, I am beggingEnglish
6·1 month agoTucker Carlson’s grift is slightly different in nature than other conservative grifters like Ben Shapiro or Sean Hannity. While the latter two hosts presume we live in an optimal society which the the scapegoat of the week is trying to ruin, Tucker Carlson acknowledges real structural problems in our present system and then scapegoats the minority of the week for those real problems.

Free and Open Source Software•Do you consider the free software movement to be an anarchist/communist project?
2·1 month agoI used to think so. It’s ideologically sound except for allowing corporations the same free use as anyone else. There are plenty of forward thinking people who would never want to support the oppressive evil of massive technology corporations and would never intentionally help them. Then they publish free software and directly help them anyway. It’s not a coincidence that most “free” software is funded by the US tech industry who is directly benefited from it. I’m not sure of a way to change it that would help regular people faster than it helps private industry crush regular people.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•"Modern" problems require modern solutions
4·1 month agoIf there was an internet meme based on the premise that somone is trying to play a record with a bent needle, I would probably need someone from the generation familiar with common phonograph problems to explain that to me. I didn’t know bent needles were a common problem for phonographs until I looked it up just now.
I know I told you my vulnerability to being accused of things I didn’t do, but this tendency doesn’t apply to internet comments. I don’t expect to have good faith conversations with anonymous strangers. I wish you the best with whatever you’re trying to accomplish.
I don’t think you understood what I wrote. You are offended on my behalf and I’m not offended. If you have difficulties with emotional regulation as well and are offended for yourself, that would be perfectly legitimate.
As a qualified cptsd haver, I am in no way offended by this accurate portrayal of my defensiveness when I feel like I may suffer damages over something I’m not guilty of. I assume others get upset about this as well.

Technology•Exclusive: AI Error Likely Led to Iran Girl's School Bombing
2·1 month agoIsrael would look very different if they didn’t have the total impunity the US provides especially recently. Everything the Israeli government has done has been the US’s responsibility for decades. The US doesn’t give Israel privileged treatment because they’ve been tricked. They do it because Israel is primarily their own colony that they want to see made permanent.

Technology•Exclusive: AI Error Likely Led to Iran Girl's School Bombing
14·1 month agoHere it is. The ultimate purpose of AI technology. Corporatism has all but eliminated any accountability by almost all Western leaders, and now there will be no accountability at all as long as this paradigm of implicitly trusting the most untrustworthy people in the world persists.

I think the problem is less being unfaithful to the source material and more that many of these books are adapted in an industrial style complete with alienated workers who are completely detached to the finished product. If hundreds of professionals are doing what their boss says to do on a project they don’t really care about, the end product tends to show the lack of effort and care. Any changes individual workers make to the film project that adapts it to the new medium is the only art to be found in a project otherwise fueled by cynicism and spite.
