Yeah, the centralized nature of Rust’s dependency management always bugged me a bit. Of course there’s nothing stopping you from just pointing directly to the source code of crates in your Cargo.toml, and I think I will start doing that from now on. Adding better tooling for this would be great.

Also Russian is full of composite words like that. “Explorer” in russian would be “исследователь” (issledovatel’) - ис (completely) + след (trace/footstep) + оват (make, imbue) + ель (he who). Literally it would be “he who makes (places) completely (covered in) footsteps”

And actually, looking at wiktionary, Old English had a word “ġefēra” (with the same meaning) which is constructed very similarly to “спутник”: ge (‘with’, still the same prefix in german e.g. Gebrüder) + fera (‘to go’/‘to fare’, e.g. in seafaring)
Canada is not geographically eligible to join the EU by definition. The founding treaties would need to be rewritten and re-signed by all parties, which does not seem feasible short-term. The way more likely route is more trade agreements and such, which would indeed be good for everyone

You mean NixOS? Well, it’s definitely not as polished as pmOS, but most things do work. My gf is using it as an LTE-enabled music player, and I’m using it to ssh into my servers when I’m out and about.
It required some hackery to get GPS and the modem to work, but then it’s mostly similar to pmOS. I need to find some time to sit down, clean up my config and publish it somewhere, but life’s main quest line is preventing any side projects rn.
If you can get it for not too much money, I’d definitely spring for it. Even if you find it doesn’t suit your daily needs (it probably doesn’t just yet), it will at least be a fun toy for playing with mobile linux.

Depends on what you count as Europe. If you include Turkey, Caucasus and/or the western part of Russia, it is fucking huge (~7500 km drive from Vorkuta to Cabo da Roca). Even if you only count EU countries, it’s still not that small (~5000 km drive north-to-south). And it’s also way denser than the US so there’s more to see overall, you can’t even explore any single country comprehensively in two weeks time (apart from microstates, of course)
From what I understand there sadly has been a more conservative shift from the government in recent years. I don’t think there are any openly discriminatory laws, but LGBT media is being censored, dating apps are removed from appstores, etc. I feel like it’s another case of severe overreaction to a threat of “western influence”, similar to Xinjang.
To be fair the (real and sometimes horrifying) human rights abuses of modern-day China kinda pale in comparison to what the US is doing (and has been doing since its founding), so I think on balance it’s good that more people support it over the imperialist hegemon.
Honestly for desktop usage it doesn’t really matter. All inits have their idiosyncrasies (“A stop job is running for Session”/logging hell on openrc/etc). But for managing a fleet of bare-metal servers I find systemd to be the best, most polished one out of the lot.
