Linux@lemmy.ml•Reddit API blew up and now I run Linux?
8·2 年前Welcome! Don’t be surprised if you feel the need to try out all the distros!
Pop_os is a good choice. It’s a solid distro and a good introduction to Linux. You can distro hop later, start with something easy for now. I installed it as a dual boot in case I needed Windows for something, but this is the first distro I haven’t felt the need to switch back.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Where, and when, did you start using Linux? Where are you now?
3·2 年前Started in college with Mandrake Linux. Used it off and on over the years, though I kept switching back. I recently settled on Pop_OS. Part of what kept me switching back was not having the time to tinker with it. Now that it mostly works, it’s become my daily driver.

Firefish and Mastodon are both microblogging platforms (like Twitter) on the fediverse. Kbin and Lemmy are both forum style platforms (like Reddit).
Where Lemmy and Mastodon are for people who prefer a more basic just the necessities experience, kbin and Firefish provide a more stylish experience with more options and customization.

2·3 年前If kbin.social does defederate from meta, you can migrate to another kbin server that hasn’t. That’s one of the nice things about the fediverse!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How familiar were you with the Fediverse before coming here?
2·3 年前I joined Mastodon a couple of times in 2018 but could never make it stick. Coincidentally rejoined last year just before the Twitter implosion, and maybe it was all the new people I was able to start using it in a way that made sense to me and rather enjoyed it, despite not using Twitter.
As soon as the writing was on the wall about the API changes, I created an account on Lemmy and here. That was end of May and the big migration happened end of June.
So tl;dr, I’ve been aware of it since 2018, but didn’t actually start using it until end of 2022.

7·3 年前I’ve been using Proton since it first came out and have had no problems with it. I have a paid account because it’s worth it to me to not be the product. And for about $5/mo I get encrypted email, calendar, vpn, drive, and password manager (though I primarily only use the first three).
They have a free version that lets you try it out, though with limited features.

3·3 年前Since you are the algorithm for what you see instead of the system, you do have to put in some work to find content that interests you. But it is possible and rewarding when you do. Assuming microblogging is of interest to you of course.

Well, this thread has strengthened my desire to adopt a teen from foster care. I technically have/had a family but they were more like roommates than parents. Left at 18 and never looked back. Had my share of lonely holidays that I would dread when they came around. I’m not trying to say I’ve had the same story as those here, but I get some parts of it really well. I’m finally at a place where maybe I can prevent that from happening to someone else.
