about

NEVER ENOUGHHHHHHH
The first cloud-rock song to sample Turnstile

I was listening to Betty Hammerschlag's new Nina-exclusive loosie, "Never Enoughhhhhhh," and feeling immersed in that early-morning state when the coffee is just starting to hit. And then something strange happened.

Hammerschlag's 2025 LP, Forever Young, was a cloud-folk highlight—a collection of genetically mutated indie-folk, tweaked by auto-tune and abstract production until it took on the characteristics of an overexposed film roll.

"Never Enoughhhhhhh" initially sounds like more of the same: twiddling acoustic guitar, overcast synth swells, and some indistinct samples flittering in the background. It achieves that quintessential cloud-rock effect where an "indie" song is tickled by the sort of sonic chatter—ad-libs, samples, active production—traditionally heard in rap and electronic music.

But then, halfway through, something familiar emerges: Brendan Yates yawping Turnstile's "Never Enough" while a chorus of fans shouts the same words back just a tick off-beat. Hammerschlag has ripped raw, live vocal audio from a Turnstile show—not the guitars or drums, just the singing and crowd participation—and dropped it into the mix. She pulls it down a layer, allowing her acoustic guitar to tumble over it, achieving the sound of someone strumming mindlessly in their bedroom over the soft, ghostly hum of a TV.

I never would've expected a Turnstile song to turn up in this kind of musical context, but I'm happy that it did.
