This album is part of a somewhat experimental series of recordings in which we used, almost exclusively, a single central microphone.
Inspired by pre-1950s recording techniques, our aim was to produce takes where one can hear the space—the natural acoustics of the studio, as well as the musicians’ varying distances from the microphone.
We all played at the same time, in the same room, which results in a live-like recording. Consequently, there could be no edits or retouches.
Perfection was never the goal—but energy and warmth, as always.
Each musician had an assigned spot in the room, depending on whether they were soloing, playing the melody, or riffing. Sometimes they even played facing away from the microphone!
We are happy and proud of the result, although we consider that we are far from mastering this technique yet. But we'll keep trying and getting better!
In the meantime, we invite you to press play, close your eyes, and imagine that we are playing live for you.
Special thanks to Leticia Leclercq for letting us turn the gorgeous domain of la Grande Sieste upside down during the whole recording session.
