The Tonearm "The more experience I have in life, the less angst there is, and the more I can reflect back on things and go, 'That was really intense. I do want to write about that.' In some ways, I'm still processing it, but I really am grateful for all of those experiences and what they've given me creatively …"

kylejglenn Charlotte has the uncanny ability to make every moment magical. Her storytelling goes beyond just journaling about her experience, to creating revelations in even the most mundane. An artist that is not afraid to place their art in contemporary setting, and still makes it feel timeless. I love that she collaborated with Phil Weinrobe on this record, and can feel his presence. Favorite track: Lost Leader.

jschapiro This is a terrific singer-songwriter album, plumbing the experiences of people who are no longer in their 20s and are engaged in adult life. My favorite track changes daily. It is most often Hurts Like Hell, but I have a real fondness for Squiddd.

about

Hurts Like Hell, Charlotte Cornfield’s 2026 Merge Records debut, is Cornfield’s sixth album. It is the first she’s recorded since the birth of her daughter in 2023, an inflection point for her as a person and an artist. The album’s recurrent themes of personal growth and renewal, of love’s perseverance through difficulty and shame and awkwardness, are rooted there.

“That experience has pulled me out of myself and given me a different outlook on things,” she says. “The vulnerability and fragility and wildness of it all has made me less focused on self, more zoomed out.”

That change in perspective is evident not only in her approach to the lyric — which now gives voice to characters and themes beyond her own headspace — but in how she approached recording. Hurts Like Hell is the most open-hearted, full-voiced album of her career, and also her most collaborative effort to date.
