about

Korean traditional music is taken to the club on K-Core, the new album from Seoul-born, Berlin-based artist HWXXNG, released on Chinabot. Across seven tracks, 800-year-old ceremonial fragments are torn apart and reforged as uncompromising techno, asking what place traditional forms hold in modern-day Korea.

The opening track, “Neo K-Core,” serves as a manifesto. It samples Samdo Nongak Garak (the three-province farmers’ percussion suite), janggu drum patterns and ceremonial chanting, and chops them into micro-fragments, pitch-shifts and reassembles them. The result is propulsive leftfield techno that declares the birth of “Korean-Core”, a sound where ancestral energy collides with contemporary club music.

On “Neo Ritual,” shamanic melodies are granulated and rebuilt as hardstyle and industrial bass. The track imagines how ancient spiritual practices mutate in a post-digital era where identity and connection strain under the pressure of tech-dominated life.

Elsewhere, heavily processed ritual jing gongs, kkwaenggwari strikes and geomungo tones reflect how shamanism persists in hyper-technological Korea amid anxiety and societal pressure. As organic memory and synthetic systems blur at a rapid clip, K-Core refuses neat answers as it explores where we can go from here.

About HWXXNG:

HWXXNG (aka Jaeho Hwang)is a DJ and producer who navigates between Europe and Seoul, bringing a unique fusion of sounds to the forefront of the club music scene. As a producer, he reimagines traditional Korean instrumentation, seamlessly weaving it into cutting-edge electronic compositions to expand creative boundaries. His DJ sets have gained acclaim for their bold and unpredictable style, where industrial Techno grooves, heavy Bass, and the raw energy of Hard Dance collide with the rhythms of Latin Core, the avant-garde edge of Post-Club, and Experimental influences, all enriched by the evocative textures of East Asian soundscapes.

After releasing his first EP on Chinabot in 2019, he has been featured in Boiler Room, 4:3 Boiler Room, NTS Radio, DJ Mag, BBC Radio 6 Music, The Wire magazine, XLR8R, Nowness, and Mixmag Korea, Nike Air/ Synth Showcase, Coeval Magazine, etc. He is a member of Chinabot but also he is a founder of Seoul- based collective called “Fragmented Service” that represents Seoul’s sub-club music scene and curates shows with International artists in Seoul such as ZULI, ENDGAME, Dis Fig, X/O, Bulma and etc.

he has played with very talented artists like Mykki Blanco, Hudson Mohawke, Foodman, Dis Fig, Lawrence Lek, Ifeoluwa, Gooooose, Warmchainss, S.O.N.S, Eastern Margins, Diamond Terrifier.
