  • I’m from the US and I did the stroller thing often. My kids are out of strollers now, but when I go run I see dads often enough out pushing one or two kids. I take my kids to the park a lot and say hey to the other moms and dads I know. I volunteer for things at my kids school, in their classes. One time it was me and two other dads, although that does seem to lean more heavily toward moms. I think moms are still better at other peoples’ kids, at least I know that’s not a strength of mine.

I think my generation of parents, right now, is equal responsibility. I have had to correct some extended family members, when my family shows up to a gathering and we have food, they automatically assumey wife made it, and I’ll dissuade them of that notion. But that’s coming from a generation of people where that’s how it was, and I take no offense, and it also doesn’t happen anymore.

I would also not take offense to someone saying “Look at you doing dad stuff,” because hey, it’s not always easy, and encouragement is … encouraging.

  • You talking about the old Italian tune-up? I’m all about it. I drive a WRX, and the majority of my trips are with my kids to and from where we walk to school. Tiny trips. So I feel inclined to really get on her when I have my occasional trips elsewhere. It’d be wrong not to.

It’s also a manual, and I know it wasn’t you (or maybe it was), but I don’t drive manual because it’s the best performance option. I know that flappy paddle gearbox, to steal a line from Clarkson, is a faster, more accurate shift than I ever could do, but it’s just fun driving stick. I just feel more connected to the road driving stick.

I got this car new in October '24, and it’s my goal to keep it forever, because I’m not sure how long for the world stick is in general. Or ICE engines. And that’s okay, it’ll be a relic.

Yeah, “car key” is just the fob thing for the push start and this engraved metal store that says “We Love You” in my daugthter’s handwriting, which is the only reason it’s on there. I can’t stand big kets and my wife is the most egregious offender.

I recently just discovered that Subaru lets you do some kind of code thing with the button that opens the trunk, so you can just leave your key in the car if you go for a run or hiking or something.

I never lock my house, but there’s also generally someone home or I’m only out for a couple minutes.
