I feel seen. Been with my partner for over 10 years and I feel the same way as the dad in this text exchange.

TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•And no, it wasn't letting Neelix on board
6·2 months agoI didn’t say it wasn’t wrong. I just watched that episode last week and it’s definitely heartbreaking but it’s just a SciFi version of the trolley problem, either decision is potentially the wrong one.
I think we need to clarify what is meant by “worst decision”. To me, the worst decision is the one that costs the most lives or one that prolongs their time in the Delta Quadrant, since that also potentially leads to more lives lost.

7·3 months agoMore posturing to look like they’re taking charge. I don’t know if any of what I’m about to say is true but if those attorneys already had the accrued PTO, they will get their pay for that time anyway, at least that’s how it’s worked anywhere else I’ve worked in the US. Also, if they can prove that the firing was retaliatory, they may be able to get further compensation and payouts.
Like I said, I know nothing of their employment/contracts so I could be talking out of my ass, but if what I said is true then the government is paying more money than they would be if they just let the prosecutors resign. I could be wrong once benefits are included.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are advent wreaths a thing outside of Germany?
2·4 months agoNo family rituals around the candles that I can remember. We lit them with the lights off but no singing or sayings or things along those lines once they were lit the lights would come back on. We did it once a week, I think on Sundays since that’s the start of the new week and then we would let them burn for a bit before putting them out until the next week.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are advent wreaths a thing outside of Germany?
12·4 months agoUS here, I was raised Catholic in West Virginia. The church I went to growing up always had an advent wreath, and when I was younger, our family would light one at home. I believe the church still does it but my family hasn’t done it since I was younger.

Books@lemmy.world•What's the best history book you've ever read?
3·4 months agoThe Indifferent Stars Above It’s a book about the Donner Party. Unfortunately all lost people learn about is “people eat each other” but the actual story so much more intriguing and that one little anecdote really minimizes the whole thing. It’s a string of bad luck coupled with greedy speculators, classism, hubris, and plain stubbornness.
The crazy thing to me is how close they almost made it to not being stuck in the mountains, one day. They sent a group out to try and get to California and alert people to their plight, that story is harrowing in its own right. Add to that, many of the survivors settled in some of the most beautiful and now expensive land in California and it’s just a wild ride from beginning to end.
Jokes on you barber, I’ve been bald since I was 25. I couldn’t get a different haircut if I tried.

It’s not even that they’re using AI to replace designers, that would at least make a little sense. They sold off the shoe designs and manufacturing to a Venture Capitalist company and Allbirds is now purely an AI company, they have nothing to do with shoes anymore.
