Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Many Americans Are Open to Car-Free LivingEnglish
7·4 months agoOne of our recent council meetings had a developer wanting to rezone a lot to medium density but needed a variance to allow for less parking given the size of the parcel.
Council unanimously approved the rezoning citing the need for more medium density projects, but were completely divided on the vote for the parking variance. They could not fathom that a developer would know best how many parking spaces would be needed to still be functional and profitable. All they wanted was to reduce the requirement from 1.5 spaces per unit down to 1.25 spaces per unit. A decrease of like 9 spaces total.
Luckily the variance was eventually approved but not before a lot of debate and grandstanding about what people are supposed to do with their cars.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Why Co-ops Are the Solution to Our Housing CrisisEnglish
8·4 months agoDon’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
CMHC already has programs available to fully fund non-market housing initiatives as long as you can meet certain requirements. One of the biggest issues is that nearly everybody sees housing as an investment and not simply a shelter so if there’s no money in it then they aren’t interested.

14·5 months agoYou’ve received a tonne of responses and I’m not even sure if this has been posted by someone else already, but there’s a YouTube video called “How to Radicalize a Normie” which goes over at length exactly how the alt right gets its hooks into young people and why it’s so hard for them to break out.

4·5 months agoI’ve been using Actual for a while now, probably close to a year. Before that I was on YNAB, which isn’t FOSS but does have a huge library of material for how to make your budget work for you instead of the other way around.
I got off YNAB after they kept raising their subscription fees for seemingly no reason. Actual is not nearly as feature-rich but you can’t really argue with the price.
