Destruction is creation. You were talking about destinations, about machinations. Destruction and creation. But I weren’t listenin’, cos it weren’t about me. Nodding, barely, to hot air and hyperbole. Now I’m hearing about tragedy. And the irony Is not lost on me. She said: “You never cared about my dreams. I took blow after blow to my self-esteem. Now I’m slowly seeping through the seams, and every crack in society”. Out of sight, out of mind. You’re next in line to be vaporised. Out of sight and out of time. Screaming “You’ll never take me alive”! Yeah, you’ll never take me alive. No, you’ll never take me alive. Yeah, we saw the whites of her eyes. You’ll never take me alive. Oh, everybody knew she was out of phase. She got that malaise. Oh, everybody knew it would end this way. We were counting down the days. She said: “You never cared about my dreams. I took blow after blow to my self-esteem. Slowly seeping through the seams, and all the cracks in society”. Out of sight, out of mind. You’re next in line to be vaporised. Out of sight and out of time. “You’ll never take me alive”! Yeah, you’ll never take me alive. No, you’ll never take me alive. Yeah, we saw the whites of her eyes. You’ll never take me alive.

What’s the use? What is love? Too confused for the human touch. It’s obtuse, all double Dutch. I’m the new recluse, so plug me into… A liquid crystal glow, Love's new low. Eat static, Romeo. So nouveau. Tell me lies, tell me truths. From idyllic eyes, that approximate the hue. By design, of baby blue. Blank and blind, but you see my soul through… A liquid crystal glow, Love's new low. Eat static, Romeo. So nouveau. A liquid crystal glow, Love's new low. Eat static, Romeo. So hollow. Beautiful, and blissfully unaware. Ecstatic indigo. Perfection. It lacks the human touch. Eat static, Romeo. Perfection. It lacks the human touch. Perfection on a plate. Love's approximation. Ecstatic indigo. Perfection. Perfection given birth A faux lover in furs. Eat static, Romeo. Perfection. Perfection, breathe for me. It's so, so lonely. Without the human touch. Eat static, Romeo. It's so, so lonely. Eat static, Romeo.

An idea forms a nucleus, To house the DNA of a dream. Creations forming foetus, Will breathe the beauty of extremes. Things we lust and long for. Things that have no name. Turn, twisted by a nightmare. Tearing at the membrane. Dreams turn away. Daren’t show their face to the day. And nightmares come to play. When dreams turn away…
4.
I am here, do you see? Sing to me, let me know you’re near. Some things help, For things too keenly felt. I can lie to myself, Drop a penny in the wishing well. Passing months. Playing dumb. The day will come, And we’ll stare into the sun. It’s never been easy, But we’ve never been this far. It’s never been much of anything. It’s never been this hard. We’ve been waiting for each other. At the edge of dusk, The looming hush. The edge of dusk. The sky… A violet rust. Waiting for so long. I’ve been waiting for so long. You don’t have to suffer to suffocate. Always compelled to hesitate. You don’t have to suffer to suffocate. But it helps, I think you can appreciate. I think you can appreciate… That it’s never been easy. And we’ve never been this far. It’s never been much of anything. But it’s never been this hard. It’s never been easy. But we’ve never been this far. It’s never been much of anything. It’s never been this hard. I’ve been waiting for you for so long, At the edge of dusk. It’s never been easy, We’ve never been this far. It’s never been much of anything. It’s never been this hard.
5.
How long has it been? Too long, it would seem. Soft songs from the machine. Little pieces of a dream. Sweet insanity. Outside, always looking in. Slide by the wayside, it’s how it begins. Glass against skin, still ill-defined; It’s such a brittle thing, this sick divide. You’re on the wrong side, Let me show you another life. You can see the outline. You’re on the wrong side, Let me show you, give me your eyes. See through mine. We’ve got to break out. We’re not meant to be here. Break out. Shatter this fear. Break out. We’re not meant to be here. Break out. Shatter this fear. Push ’til the fractures sing. There’s a crack in everything. Smash as the walls close in. From prayers and wings, To a diamond rain, glistening. So sublime in slow motion. Blowing open the hole. Tear apart to make a whole. Use pieces and debris, To form something free. We’ve got to break out, We’re not meant to be here. Break out. Shatter this fear. Break out. We’re not meant to be here. Break out. Shatter this fear. Escape. It’s how it begins. We’re not meant to be here. It’s how it begins. Shatter this fear.

Gravity 04:42 video
In a little black box. The last words of the lost. To those we adore. Before we all hit the floor. Kiss the sun. Wax wings run. How it stings, hubris and vanity. Kids on stun. It’s raining everyone. Clip the wings, and the fall comes naturally. Faster, faster we fall. Feel the pull of gravity. Faster, faster we fall. We’re angels of atrocity. With no inertia, we reach maximum velocity. Gravity. Oh, retroversion. Regret, we regret our curiosity. Then crash with a grandiose ferocity. Gravity. The rush intensifies. Tears stream from our eyes. Below, the Earth open wide. And we wait to collide. Faster, faster we fall. Feel the pull of gravity. Faster and faster we fall. Feel the pull of gravity. We reach maximum velocity. All humanity. Fall. Foolish wonder, such vanity, Blasphemy, burn, crash. We flew too high. Atrophy, Gravity. They’ll shoot you out the sky. Blasphemy. Gravity. Falling earthbound. The rising ground. Falling earthbound. Eye the rising ground. Falling earthbound. Gravity.

Every day I’m terrified. It gives way as I repeat the lines. Shovelling it in to fill the void. Art, things, empty noise. Close your eyes, open wide. Killing time. Making plans for better things. Idle hands tease the trigger spring. Every day, it’s more of the same. Dreaming of ways to make you pay. Close your eyes, open wide. Killing time. Don’t you feign surprise. Killing time. We’re killing words, or brain cells. Whatever rhymes. Look me in the eyes. Killing time. We’re filled with hurt, and killing sells. So do or die. The shot, the fire. Shock it to me like a live wire. Don’t you feign surprise. Our apathy, It consumes the disguise. Look me in the eyes. And you’ll see me killing you. Killing time. Don’t you feign surprise. We’re killing words, or brain cells. Whatever rhymes. Look me in the eyes. We’re filled with hurt. And killing sells, So do or die. Making plans for better things. Idle hands tease the trigger spring.

Take 04:36 video
Take the pleasure, take the pain. Take all that’s new, take the same. Take the pressure, take my name. Take my debts, and all I made. My love and loss, the words I say. Take it back, this wicked game. Take, you can take away today. You take, take for the sake of it. Take, you take. Take the sin, take the sorrow. Take, you take. Take it all if you can swallow. Make it dull, take the lights. Take the colours, then take the white. Take all that’s false, take what’s true. Take the pure, and take the used. Take what I keep, and all I gave you. And if there’s a cure, you can take that, too. Take, you can take away today. You take, take for the sake of it. Take, you take. Take the sin, take the sorrow. Take, you take. Take it all if you can swallow. Swallow. Take the sin, take the sorrow. Swallow. Take it all if you can swallow.

20X9, the fear of our Lord. It’s dark in July, dystopian decor. Blue, blackened-red skies that smother the scores. We are amplified, post-human hordes. The flesh is flawed and in short supply. This is war, nature meets sci-fi. Adore and abhor the spectral spire. Pulling us toward cyber desire. The flesh is flawed. This is war. Feel the rhythm of the algorithm. In a syntax of swords, sing and respire. With no vocal cords, a Mellotron choir. Perfect and pure, veins are wires. We are restored, butterflIEs in binary. More human than human. Who am I? Too dead to die. More human than human. Who am I? Who am I? My mind is A.I. Feel the rhythm of the algorithm. More human than human. Feel the rhythm of the algorithm.

Grind 04:46 video
Down in the dirt, it’s hard to be clean. Filth and fury, simmer and seethe. You say I’ve got it good ‘cos I can breathe. Always waiting for my next hit of dopamine. Tell me more about your perfect dream. It’s about the more you have, the less there is for me. Tell me more about the perfect crime. You can scream, I don’t mind. Tell me more about your perfect dream. Everything’s a zero sum, that’s how I see. Tell me more about the perfect crime. There’s no escape, not this time. Grind. Yeah. Grind. There’s no escape from the grind. From the grind. Yeah. Grind. Forever confined by this design. I don’t blame fate, it’s simply hard to grow. Under the weight of the great unknown. We’ll break our fingers to reach a plateau. And when we fall it’s amusingly so. Tell me more about the perfect crime. There’s no escape. No, not this time. Grind. Yeah. Grind. There’s no escape from the grind. From the grind. Yeah. Grind. Forever confined by this design. You free something inside me. A fool, but a fool can dream. So I plant a seed, Something to be found. Take a look, look around. Where is everyone? Flowers in the sun. Cowering under the sword of Damocles. Waiting, oh so patiently, to cut down all the beauty. What do we hope to find. An escape from the grind. What do we hope to find. Way more than this. Grind. Yeah. Grind. Your meat’s the grease for this machine. Forever confined by this design. You can scream, But you will grind.

Resonate 04:31 video
I am within cacophony. In the rhythm, made of melody. A soul in sound, A sonic ghost. In the air, around, You feel it float. Feel me pulsing through the floor. Feel me in this waveform. I’m a being in the beat. Existential other. Everlasting, on repeat. I’m forever, like a lover that never leaves. In the dark I… Resonate. Reverberate. I want to shake your soul. The needle cuts me, digs in deep. Into the groove and inside you. In melodies and wordplay. And the rhythm beneath. You have me, always. An angel in the ether. You could call this death in stereo. We move to the echoes of ghosts. You could call this death in stereo. I am a ghost that echoes. Resonate. Reverberate. I want to shake your soul. Can you feel me? Break. Resonate. Shake, I want to shake your soul.

Unmaker 05:58
Destruction is creation. The pretty things are mine. I take them inside. All types of beauty I find. I leave none behind. My pen tears the paper. I’m savage, not safer. With all your substance to savour. In a haze of Ethanol vapour. I will destroy. Music to noise. I will destroy. Unmaker boy. I seize and slowly encroach. Sting with the ink in my stroke. Hiding behind what others wrote. I’m the ghost between the notes. With something to say. Stuck in my throat. All bullets and ballet. In search of a poignant quote. I am the unmaker. Far beyond reproach. I push the colours in the paint. Feel it kicking. Fade to grey, kill to create. The canvas is my victim. I push the colours in the paint. I break and desecrate. I push the colours in the paint. I break. Unmaker. Smear my soul, crush the clay. Desaturate. All greatness into shapeless grey. Unmaker. I defile what’s been done before. Use the past like a whore. All your art and splendour. I reduce it to tasteless decor. Without shame, without fear. Out on the wild frontier. I’ve all the world’s wonders, here. Forged and flipped into souvenirs. Out on the wild frontier. All your art, souvenirs. You create, I take. Take apart, unmake. Unmaker. Destruction is creation.

about

The overarching theme of ‘Lash’ is “destruction is creation”, signifying that breaking down, removing, or ending old structures is a necessary precursor to building something new, as summarised by Pablo Picasso's quote, "Every act of creation is first an act of destruction". This concept highlights that true innovation or renewal requires dismantling the existing state to provide a blank slate for growth.

This isn’t only true for art and creativity, but also works for emotional, spiritual and personal matters: You can’t build a new version of yourself if the old one’s still taking up all the space. You can’t meet the love of your life if you're clinging to a lost flame from the past. Sometimes stuff has to fall apart so better things can land. The deconstructed, ‘decaying’ orchestral compositions in the beginning and ending of the album illustrate this sentiment.

These aren’t empty hooks or recycled party chants. Although the lyrical content is very personal and deals with serious matters which are not very uplifting, DEAD LIGHTS dances on the volcano, proudly wearing the badge of ‘low art’, as stated in the album’s subtitle “Lesions of low art”.

This refers to the (manufactured) gap between “low art” (popular culture) and so-called “high art”. According to Richard, who has one foot in each (he also exhibits audio-visual installations in galleries and composes music for many modern ballet companies), there’s a lot of solemnity in the “high art” world, just like in the military and in monarchy. Solemnity in the form of not being serious, it’s the performance of seriousness. But these spaces are easily disturbed, revealing their absurdity. That same absurdity is embraced by the “low art” of DEAD LIGHTS, where it unapologetically takes the shape of outrageousness and extravaganza. Saul adds: “This album really brings to the fore an element of our music that’s always been there; the juxtaposition of hard, high-energy music mixed with a downbeat cynicism and introspection. This creates an uneasy dichotomy; one half seeking to revitalise and empower, the other attempting to tear at the foundations. It creates a tension, a sense of everything always hanging in the balance - two things joined together yet continuously pulling each other apart, one entity that is simultaneously both destroying and creating.”

Recognising the fact that every rebellion ages into a design style, ‘Lash’ aims to be gorgeous enough to pull you close - and sharp enough to cut once you’re there, leaving “lesions of low art”: whip marks that signify a lasting impression.
