I’ve got a bunch of instruments that I have no idea how to play, but that its fun to own. I have a guitar tuned to open E so my toddlers can bang on it. It’ll get destroyed someday but playable but crap sounding guitars are about $50 last time I looked (and a far sight better than literal toys).

Most things in this world are 90% prep, 10% execution.
Currently it’s buying stupid but vaguely useful things.
I spent $50 on a SDR radio that can listen to a very wide spectrum of stuff. Also got a cheap pair of GMRS radios and got hooked onto the local repeater tower for about a 50 mile radius of communication.
A friend had a gas coming from their oven on occasion so I got a sensor for about $70 to try to fix it (and did so successfully)
I have more flashlights than any one man needs, but they do come in useful.
I just got a lock pick set and a practice lock. Probably never use any vague skill I’d develop, but if it saves me calling one locksmith, one time, it’ll have paid for itself.
A good pair of binoculars is just nice to have.
Tools of any sort.
Non-stupid prepper stuff should some crazy shit go down. Water purification, solar systems, weapons.
I’d like to try one of the mesh networks, but have more pressing hobby-crap to pursue.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What happened to the Dem Party in America? It's kind of like once Kamala lost, which they deserved, and lost congress. They ran like a dog with its tail between its legs instead of fighting?
4·14 hours agoClearly they’re waiting on Captain America. Schumer wouldn’t have to kill all of them, just enough to get a supermajority.
I wonder how many protests they have attended. I talked to a rep at a candidate who was trying to organize grassroots. AOC hasnt stopped. Bernie is old but stumping all the time. The PEOPLE need to follow and get involved.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what's a good protest song for anti-war, anti-ice, and anti-oligarchy?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you experiencing any shortages where you live?
1·17 days agoTurbos can and are very often used to increase efficiency. You’re extracting waste gasses to compress air and overall it’s a net gain. Especially if it’s being run at more constant load, such as highway cruising or charging an EV battery.
Bad? I’m pretty sure you mean horrified, embarrassed and worn thin from fighting morons.
This is the front side. The back side is not so clean. It’s a small TV broadcaster in the central USA. Im designing the replacement system for those racks currently.

Less so art, but still interesting to some.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the last new (to you) band you got really into?
4·21 days agoI’m currently waiting for Jesse Welles to take the stage. His song “RED” hooked me hard.
Probably, but they’re likely cheaper per watt hour than the style in the photo.
I got a cheap UPS for this. They’re designed more for this purpose. My fiber modem takes FOREVER to reconnect so it’s moreso for little power dips in my case.
I know everyone loves to hate on YT, but give this a shot…. https://youtu.be/61I4hlig78w
Can these things hit 100 or 1000 swarming micro drones? I really don’t know, but would bet that it’s got a limited amount of tracking and fire-rate. At say $1000 per drone including a couple pounds of high explosive charge, I doubt a single one of these can guard any zone.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It is now better than ever to find alternatives to fossil fuels, do you have any plans?
6·27 days agoThe panels are cheap. The interconnect isn’t too bad and the controller is another chunk, but it’s the install that keeps me from a cheap DIY. I really don’t want to mess up my roof.
It’ll take a crazy number as a pipeline would be easily damaged by a VERY small (consumer size) drone.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What movie do you think is really underrated?
2·1 month agoSneakers is a lot of fun, but there’s one scene that just irks me. In the beginning of the film, the main character is picking up a check from a bank teller after their “white hat” elite team stole (then returned) untold millions from the same bank. The teller cuts him a check and asks what he does. He gives a short explanation and he says “it’s a living”. She looks at the check and back at him saying “not a very good one”. It’s clear that she’s a low level employee and there were 4 or 5 people on the crew, and she’d have no idea how much work went into the job. Even at minimum wage, it would have been a pretty nice paycheck and she would have had no idea whether it was a good amount, nor whether it was just one guy getting paid the amount on the check. The comment makes no sense.
Consulting and Project management are ripe for AI disruption. No way will they be eliminated, but an AI camera tracking the blue collar workers plus a “manager” who is just a data entry clerk, especially when combined with other data sources will remove a massive amount of managing a project.
Consultants and Sales to a large degree are just about listening to clients whine about something and repeating back to management (in a different voice) the same things that their own staff is saying. LLMs are good at being that different voice.

That sounds awesome. Come do my area lol. Maps are great.
