They bought more of an amalgam, or a chimera, which is a different kind of mythological beast, but also a general term for part of one thing joined to a very different other thing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a band or musician that you found out too late that they were actually really awesome?
9·1 day agoMusical tastes change over your lifetime too, so what was cool when you were a teenager might become cringe later on in life, and vice versa.
And even later on, the things that became cringe might make a comeback and become cool again.
As a broad category, 70s Disco is a great example of that. The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, ABBA, etc etc. were overplayed, but it was popular music because it was good.
60s and 70s soul samples become the foundations for new rap and dance tracks.
I love Judy Collins, Mary Hopkins, Harry Belafonte and other late 60s and 70s vocalists even though they were big before I was born.

1351·1 day agoThe whole affair made something clear: for many on the right, their past tolerance of gay and bi people who aligned with them on a few pet issues was never rooted in principle. It was always about convenience. We were never truly accepted — just temporarily useful. And now that some of us have outlived our political utility, they’re more than happy to throw us to the wolves the moment the opportunity arises.
I am still incredulous at the existence of Log Cabin (gay male) Republicans, or even Peter Thiel.
Why on earth would you give any support to an organization dedicated to the destruction of people like you?
Does your own hatred of minorities and the poor make you willing to risk joining forces with those who are likely to come after you next?

Classic Rock: A Journey Through Timeless Music@lemmy.world•Donnie Iris - Ah! Leah! [1980].It was released as a single in late 1980 and reached number 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100, 22 on the Cash Box Top 100 and 19 on the US Billboard Top Tracks chart.
2·1 day agoLove Is Like A Rock is indeed a rockin’ track! Thank you! It does sound vaguely familiar.
Looking at Iris’ Wikipedia page, his singles didn’t reach too far up the Billboard 100, which is what the Top 40 show used.
So his music wouldn’t have reached saturation levels where I would have heard it outside of Kasem’s show.
And we didn’t have specialized rock stations in Hong Kong at the time.
The mostly-British expatriate kids at my school were mostly into edgy “heavy metal” bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, that kind of thing, so a US mainstream rocker like Donnie Iris wouldn’t have been on their music radar either.

1·2 days agoI feel like I should know at least one Donnie Iris hit, but I don’t recognize anything I’ve heard of his that comes up on a google search.
I could swear I remember his name from back on the America’s Top 40 radio show with Kasey Kasem because the late 70s/early 80s is the era that I listened to it the most, and also when he was most prolific.
I, for one, would love to see the LGBTQ+ bomb go boom!

For me it’s been a generic technology-uber-medieval with a pleasant feminist twist.
It’s nice to have virtually unlimited free energy to make concrete and steel, where in real life, manufacturing these are very expensive in terms of energy.

1·3 days agoI don’t remember anything about how S1 ended, so I caught up reading the manhwa.
There really isn’t much more in the manhwa than in the anime, but the manhwa is much better paced for the story that it’s telling.
The story is deceptively simple, with a lot of internal exposition, and I can understand how they’re having a difficult time adapting it.
It would take a very talented script writer, storyboarder and director to make a decent adaptation.
Adapted as it is with just the surface action, it is a pretty dull story, because the writing and direction just isn’t getting the characters’ thoughts across. And the slow action with fast pace of the thoughts and emotions in the manhwa make it a really difficult piece to animate.
It’s like they’d be better off taking a Blue Lock type of approach with powerpoint graphics and exciting narration over it, but then manhwa art doesn’t really support that type of thing.

California@lemmy.world•Sen. Elizabeth Warren endorses Katie Porter in California governor’s race
2·3 days agoRCV is only in a few cities that have adopted it, such as Oakland and San Francisco, and only in local elections.
edit: Berkeley, Albany, San Leandro and Davis also have RCV. Redondo Beach in SoCal is the only place in California outside of the Bay Area with RCV
I cribbed that from https://www.rcvresources.org/where-is-rcv-used/
Statewide, the only quirk is open primaries, which doesn’t apply to Presidential elections.
