Max Devereaux and Alec Watson present their first collaborative album, FEBRILE. Recorded entirely within a single high-rise conference room in downtown Minneapolis, the record is a study in presence and escape—the sound of two artists using the architecture around them to filter the tension of the city below.

The album took shape during the height of Operation Metro Surge, an exceptionally tense and traumatic period across the Twin Cities. From the sixth floor of the skyscraper apartment building where Devereaux was living, the two recorded as the ongoing ICE siege unfolded on the streets directly beneath them. They treated the conference room as both shelter and instrument, letting its walls and windows mediate the turmoil outside. The result is a site-specific work in which the building itself becomes a lens for the atmosphere of the city—the political situation serving as cultural backdrop, the music remaining a personal reflection of their lived experience during that time. The title track, "Febrile," was the first piece they recorded; it now closes the album as its tenth and final track.

The textures of FEBRILE are built from a mixture of hardware synthesizers and field recordings, many of them pulled from Devereaux's personal archive of sounds gathered in hardware stores, parking garages, and city fountains. Watson responded to these recordings by building tones through FM synthesis, then improvising, layering, and composing harmonic and melodic material to pair with each environment, while Devereaux shaped the whole through electroacoustic mixing techniques honed over years of collaborative work. Across its ten tracks, the album bridges a rigorous electroacoustic tradition with a warm melodic sensibility, threading avant-garde and minimalist gestures through the eerie synthesis of early 1950s science fiction.

In their own words, the artists recall how the collaboration began:

The collaboration began in the summer of 2025 after we met at a performance of Manfred Werder in Minneapolis. I had recently moved to the city and was beginning to explore the experimental music scene there when I met Alec Watson, a musician from Chicago who had also recently moved to the Twin Cities. Our first attempt at working together was actually a bit of a failure. I asked Alec to help me record a cover of the song "Shall We Gather at the River" for an upcoming Lloyd Kaufman film called 'The Power of Positive Murder'. The song was ultimately rejected by the Troma Entertainment filmmakers, but that hiccup became the catalyst for a more serious collaboration. We decided to move away from that project and start fresh with ambient and synth-based music which eventually became the sessions for Febrile.
