I felt lost, and unheard For a lack of a better word And the conversation flooded From the facts through to the absurd But now I'm on a roll (I've had a few) And I feel alright With opinion long on empty I'll just coast the remaining time But I don't want to sound like I'm just pretending I'm just too close to the line And the new world educates me Push the sixes from the nines And call your side Now we're well on our way To discuss what's the "real thing," I don't mean to sound enlightening But am I left wing, or am I right wing? I don't want to sound like I'm just pretending I'm just too close to the line And the new world educates me Push the sixes from the nines And call your side The lines are drawn I'm way offside A washed out bridge A filtered mind You can't believe in more than one side Unless you're living on dreams I guess I'm living on dreams I've no choice but to wade Through the paths of my disinterest I don't mean to sound not in this Am I showing a growing indifference? But I can only slouch, with a grin I feel alright And though my words are slow and slurring I still feel I should empty my mind I don't want to sound like I'm just pretending I'm just too close to the line And the new world educates me Push the sixes from the nines And call your side

It's hard to admit When you barely fit in I swore I'd never come here again But that's the flow of a mind Caught in magnetic craze A hyperceptual parade Feeling happy just to sit alone And watch the others blindly following to The infinite groove And I can barely seem to move And although I'd love to try To further open up my mind I just slowly step aside And watch the hedonists collide The crowd is alive Full of primal relief I feel old, and they feel free But they're just slaves to style We love your style Tied to the scene We love your style Fashion's latest Kings and Queens Feeling happy just to sit alone And watch the others blindly following to The infinite groove And I can barely seem to move And although I'd love to try To further open up my mind I just slowly step aside And watch the hedonists collide I must admit Let's keep our voices discreet You know, I still enjoy the "break beat." So strip me of mind We'll strip your mind Strip the mistakes We'll strip your mind And make me change for fashion's sake Feeling happy just to sit alone And watch the others blindly following to The infinite groove And I can barely seem to move Am I the last alive Who always feels one step behind But I just keep that thought inside And watch the hedonists collide And as the envy fills my mind I watch the hedonists collide

Turtle Boy 02:52
Hey turtle boy Avoiding harm You've grown a hardened shell You're learning by example Just because I pushed away That doesn't mean that much I just seem to work that way You taught me how to be Protected too And how to cover my feelings The way you seem to do I learned a lot from you I learned a lot from you Hey turtle boy Where have you gone? It's starting to bring you down You're going undercover I'm pushing you off I just couldn't resist And I recall sometimes I didn't always act like this You taught me how to be Protected too And how to cover my feelings The way you seem to do I learned a lot from you I learned a lot from you I learned it far too soon

To think I could step on toes with careless prose I'm not that stupid And I think I'd be safe and sound if I avoid the sound And I refuse to move Everything to you was a broken rule That you define with expectation Everything to you was a broken rule And you don't seem to understand me In the first place I feel ignored, and Growing bored with all your pretence And in the next place I chew my pride, and Crawl inside of your enlightened world Everything to you is a broken rule A telling sign of your frustration Everything to you is a broken rule Stick to yours, and I will stick to mine It's hard to keep in line with your Ever changing views When your face shows all the signs of your disapproval I don't prepare that well I almost find it so distasteful But I pretend that I don't really mind I believe that I've found my way, but you Persuade that I'm uncertain. And the next thing I know is I can't keep my Mind in line I'm feeling torn in two Everything to you is a broken rule And I'm confined by expectation Everything to you is a broken rule Stick to yours, and I will stick to mine It's hard to keep in line with your Ever changing views When your face shows all the signs of your disapproval I don't prepare that well I almost find it so distasteful But I pretend that I don't really mind And I find, I'd love to free from you But I find But I find, that I still cling to you

Thomas Green 03:53
It seemed to grasp and tear The fact he'll always be Just Thomas Green It almost seemed unfair He never fit the scene Poor Thomas Green So he just takes his place Behind them His past could be erased Behind them The plan was set for weeks They planned it to a tee Excluding Thomas Green But they soon found his role The scapegoat "Someone has to take note Someone must be impressed by Someone has to take note Someone must be impressed by me." "So you just shut your mouth You'll be out in three Thomas Green.” Someone has to take note Someone must be impressed by me Thomas Green

Stop, what you think That I'm elastic, on the wrong track Everyone else is to blame And my excuses seem so useless, but I try I'm far and away And my intent's in the wrong tense And everyone else just gets in the way With all their laugh tracks, and their wisecracks You know I'm too tired to explain this I won't try to explain this to you I'm best pulling away From all the rat pack, I'm the abstract That doesn't mean I've found a road that is paved I think I'll hitchhike on the long ride I don't mind And the more that I push for my place I just keep falling flat on my face And the one's that think I've fallen from grace Just keep pushing their views in my face Just keep pushing their views in my Don't give up just back off a little bit Don't give up just back off a little bit

Far from heart, but deep in mind We keep in touch from time to time Our clandestine Conversation time I felt deflated, a little bit outdated And I was thinking 'bout the simple times So I thought I'd give you a call Just to talk about the things we had I should've buried them years ago Now I'm caught between the new and old Something, somewhere, somehow has to give I shouldn't feel anxious This once was common practice And if the past seems to haunt me now God help me when I'm 64 Thinking hard about the things I had Should've buried them years ago Now I'm caught between the new and old Something, somewhere, somehow has to give "I'm glad you called, everything's improved And my boyfriend's new, and he's a poet, too!" You never talked about the things we had Must've buried them years ago But you recited all your boyfriend's poems And I don't care about And I remembered such a simple fact I just can't stand the phone It ties me up between the new and old But something, somewhere, somehow has to give

It's been a long time since it felt that strong He hardly knows what she really feels But the key to her mind is in the envelope That he had found, or so he'd like to believe And he couldn't help himself at all He felt he had to know it all He'll finally prove his doubts were wrong It was hid real well, behind the magazines She probably felt it wasn't ready to read But she is out for a while, he is all alone He'll finally know what she really does feel And he couldn't help himself at all He felt he had to know it all He'll finally prove his doubts were wrong And he read Of how she misses times that they had And how she still loves him and wants him so bad And she's still in love And he's still in love 'Cause she's still But then his mind wrapped up into a ball And he held himself against the wall Because it wasn't meant for him at all And the world stood still His mind was filled But he should have known Leave well enough alone

Well it's a delicate breeze Between the ebb and the flow I thought we rode it with ease Although the cons well outweigh the pros I thought I'd let you know I thought I'd let you know Take it from the one on a similar line It's hard enough just being what you wanted to be We seem to do alright while maintaining our pride We've waiting too long, to push that aside Well you can do what you want Don't let some other decide Just keep a confident front Although we've fallen on hard times I'll never let this go I'll never let this go So take it from the one on a similar line It's hard enough just being what you wanted to be We seem to do alright while maintaining our pride We've waiting too long, to push that aside We've waiting too long, to push that aside It's a delicate breeze And we've been paying the price But these are days to be seized Well I should follow my own advice And never let this go I'll never let this go So take it from the one on a similar line It's hard enough just being what you wanted to be We seem to do alright in our respective lives The feeling's too strong, to push that aside And plus we've waited too long to push this aside

Though the place was rather full He quickly caught my eye He hasn't changed in years gone by Still trying to impress With his "educated" style He hasn't changed in years gone by He still tries to figure out Just what he's supposed to say And the role he's supposed to play The Chameleon strikes again His colleagues are impressed He's boisterous and loud They love the way he wins the crowd I tried to sneak right through But quickly I am found And they love the way he puts me down He still tries to figure out Just what he's supposed to say And the role he's supposed to play The Chameleon strikes again "How have you been, I haven't seen you since school Did you know that I now drive a BMW My 'take-home' is 40 grand Are you still in your little band? I can't say that I'm much a fan" And the voices rose My face turned red And I start to dream his death And I try to figure out Just what I'm supposed to say Then he mispronounced my name Turned, and walked away The Chameleon strikes again

You were acting in the crudest way You're the king of all the underground, or so you say And you've been going on and on all night Bragging about your penchant for a good drunken fight I gather that I would never match your violent mind And I refuse to try I don't want to stand here and drink with you I don't even want to converse with you To me you're just a common fool Who thinks he can't exist without friends approval I don't think there's a common thread I hardly understand any words you've said Has anyone told you that punk is dead Well I would love to Now you're spitting out your venom words Criticizing everything that I would prefer And contrary to your chosen view I understand that you're a member of the well-to-do I gather that I would never match your nihilist mind And I refuse to try I don't want to stand here and drink with you I don't even want to converse with you To me you're just a common fool Who thinks he can't exist without friends approval I don't think there's a common thread I hardly understand any words you've said Has anyone told you that punk is dead Well I would love to And we'll hold you're hand, and we'll round The bend, and you'll meet my friends And we'll smash your head, me and all my Friends, 'cause you still pretend That you're so hard edged
12.
Your face seemed to hold no expression Though you knew just what you're to do I was the easiest target I'm still imprisoned by memories of you So I paid you a conjugal visit I still had so much to give And my heart beat a million a minute As I returned to the place that you lived We both knew the point of my presence We both knew where this always leads I was still serving the sentence And he would be gone for a week Your face seemed to hold no expression As we writhed and entwined on the floor You're features were changed by the shadows I don't know you at all anymore So I pushed my face in the pillow Grasped your familiar white skin This is the last of the conjugal visits When I exit I know it's the end

about

Two whole years after the release of their debut album, Duotang create another pop masterpiece in The Cons And The Pros. Rod Slaughter and Sean Allum rip into the album on a loud note with the bouncey and crisp "Call Your Side" and the swirling heights of "The Hedonists Collide". Throughout the twelve tracks the album moves swiftly from the detonating pop of first single "Broken Rule" to the articulate depths of "Leave Well Enough Alone" and back into the brassy mod-pop of title track "The Cons & The Pros".

Recorded at Toronto's Electromagnetic Sound and Winnipeg's Private Ear, The Cons & The Pros was produced by Brenndan McGuire, responsible for other pop-tones from Sloan, Jale, and the Superfriendz. Few bands are able to bottle the intensity of their stage show onto tape, but with the added help of a brass section, organ, and a multiplicity of layered vocal harmonies, McGuire and Duotang have managed to turn two rhythm instruments and a voice into an orchestral exercise in recorded energy.
