Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a scientific fact that sounds made up but is 100% real?
22·4 days agoYeah, it’s more green.
Must do that in earnest, another time.
It’s hard to tell how much everything is just another chance to grift and these people are simply happy to debase themselves for their 15 min of fame (and associated ad money and derived merchandise opportunities), or genuinely just a caricature of dumb Americans.
Both are depressing.

Memes@sopuli.xyz•Good luck figuring it out since it also doesn’t come with man pages
74·9 days agoIt’s a mascot, not a logo. So it having a gender isn’t strange.
Also, since its pronouns are (quoting the announcement blog post) “he/him, they/them, she/her, and it” that is very open and not rather post-gender, in my opinion. The focus in the announcement is not on thee mascot’s gender in fact.
It’s a rather amazing part of the world!

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Scam Altman says it’ll take another year before ChatGPT can start a timer. An $852 billion company, ladies and gentlemen.
10·12 days agoIt’s become more and more obvious that the reason he regularly looks like a rabbit caught in headlights is because he is, in fact, a fraud and not the tech genius he would like everyone to believe.

Linux@programming.dev•What are the more obscure independent linux distros?
5·15 days agoSliTaz GNU/Linux is a cool lightweight diatro.
Haven’t used it in a while. It was dead for a bit, but it’s active again. I should look at what it feels like these days. I remember being impressed at how smoothly it ran while looking good, +10 years ago, in 300MB or so.

3·15 days agoMakes them read Scheme.
But seriously, it’s a scheme-based approach to a fully free declarative OS, similar to NixOS (from which it was forked ages ago. They are doing very interesting work and some HPC and scientific folks are taking notice.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do some people with college degrees and an education, still act so fucking stupid?
3·15 days ago(Academic) education is not intelligence, and certainly not wisdom.
The worst part is this education doesn’t protect you from falling for certain loopy ideas. Critical reasoning is a skill and like all skills it needs to be learnt and maintained.

3·15 days agoThe number of trackers this site wants you to accept and load is insane. I know it’s not that unusual these days, but fuck that, i’m not putting up with your clearly malicious interpretation of legitimate interest to see one article.
“Help, we are being attacked”
“Stop fighting!”
“Watch out, there’s a bus coming!”
“Leave me alone, leave me alone!”
“Are you proud of working for ICE? Do you go to bed proud of what you do?”

2·17 days agoI believe it’s electrical engineering. A safe trade (pun intended) for the foreseeable.
What are you on about :) censoring “fuck” is completely dumb and should be pointed out for what it is.
Expungiation is yet another shitty thing the puritan US are forcing onto the rest of the world and should be mocked and derided just like other stupid things.

World News@lemmy.world•Socialist Emmanuel Grégoire elected mayor of ParisEnglish
1·19 days agoOh no, that’s what socialist means, it’s just that the label has been emptied of all substance by power-driven parties that gave up on enacting in depth, courageous change years ago.
But, like all organisations, they are heterogeneous, so some people can be good and interesting.
I have no idea what the last four paragraphs are replying to.
Mate, I made no suggestions, you just went off on your merry horse there :)
There are absolutely good reasons to yell at people.
Seriously, what kind of performative crap is saying things like “it’s never right to yell at anyone”?
I can’t seriously think you either believe or have thought this through.

Your comment is really confusing. If you are talking about the original lingua franca, it was a mix of Mediterranean languages and so contained French.
If you mean in the sense of an international vehicular language, French has historically been the language of diplomacy and is one of the official languages of the UN.
That English is such a international language is a pretty recent development.
