I was thinking on that after remembering some musics’ lyrics can be rather challenging to find.

Sites may host/may have hosted such, but they can be rather sparse, and given how the fediverse works, such posts, which would likely be mainly text-based, could stay propagating in the network even if the poster’s instance dies.

And the way I understand it, the fediverse is also a potential good search engine in the long run, which could give yet another use for such a community.

However, having tested in months prior LLMs as lyrics search engines, all of them would say it could be a breach of copyright and would refuse to give the lyrics. Are they correct, or is it just their programmers being overzealous or even fearmongerers?

And so, all in all, would it be an interesting idea to make such a community, or better ignore/give up from the idea?

There is indeed a licensing issue. It’s just like sharing the contents of an entire book. Just so happens that lyrics are shorter, but same rights apply. Would any artist sue you for infringement? Very unlikely, but it is technically in their right and they would likely win the case. It is their IP.

I see. In such case then, and entering head-on on the legal side of things, I wonder if there’d be exceptions for when the purpose is information, or even if a community/instance could be licensed for that as apparently, from a quick search, some lyrics sites do license the contents they host. Though probably a question better asked to a lawyer.

Perhaps the solution is to just add to the already established sites which have licences set up already. I think though worst case scenario is an artist asks you to take down the post, but if it’s already propogated to other instances it becomes uncontrolable. But the vast majority of artists k suspect would be honored.

I think lemmy and even reddit kind of exist in a gray zone where posting non oc is technically infringment without accrediting the artists etc unless it’s CC0.
