Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How should I mount my storage HDDs in Proxmox?English
5·13 hours agoZfs for some reasons is always loved by the self hosting experts.
Personally I don’t like it because it’s over complicated and not officially part of the Linux kernel.
20y of self hosting for me means Linux software raid (raid1 then moved to raid5) and mostly ext4, recently (=last 2 years) upgraded to btrfs on my data raid. Btrfs at least is integrated in the Linux kernel and while has some drawbacks (don’t do raid with btrfs, put btrfs on MD raid instead) its been super rock solid.
I would have kept ext4, but thought why not try btrfs, and it’s been so smooth that I had no reasons to go back.
Soulseek
Or scrape from spotify/similar service with tools like spotisub or use yt music with any one of the tons of scrapers.
This is the o my reason I pay for Spotify premium… To the those sweet high quality tracks.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If I got in a collision with a car from the 70s with a car today, would not the 70s car win out since it would primarily be metal? If so why don't people buy more 70's cars?English
25·3 days agoNope. Its much safer to crash in a today car. 70’s would break as well and break you more. Both would be totaled anyway in such a case.
Today’s cars are designed to crumple and protect you, older cars transmit more damage to your body.
Probably rage bait.
Anyway, I like the simplicity of OpenRC and prefer it over systemd. After many years, I never had a reason to switch my Gentoo boxes (servers, laptops, etc) over.
I use systemd at work too, and it always feel unnecessarily complicated and that fixes issues I never had.
Whatever fit your bills I guess. Choice is good, so I am happily applying my choices with OpenRC.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If someone opened a store and just sold stuff at cost, which undercuts every other competitors by alot. Would this not for the big corps to come way down on their prices?English
1·6 days agoIn that case, you should definitely open the shop.
I think, tough, that your prices will be higher than normal retail, due to volumes and supply chain.
Also, the local “Wall-Mart” (or whatever corporation) would need to sell a very small loss for a few months to kill you, while subsidizing their loss with other shops in other locations…
You can’t win. But you can try and people will undoubtedly appreciate that

1·6 days agoYou mean including also staff wages? Would that also cover a wage for the owner? Or, in other words, a tiny bit of profit so the owner can live out of it?
At this point, try to put a cap on greed.

6·7 days agoMy blonde hair kept always confusing small boys. Are your hair yellow or white?
So, there is that, blonde is not a color, it’s a whole spectrum of colors from white, yellow and brown.

16·8 days agoWe don’t need fake ai written posts against AI.
And frankly the only believable thing is the AI hallucinating.
Even the point that auth was missing is not believable.

23·8 days agoThe 80% is useless, batteries are not built to be charged continuously. I suggest you use a smart plug that you turn on and off periodically

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Can I charge and give ethernet access to a mobile phone?English
7·8 days agoIf you get the USB working, beware of bulging battery: its not a IF but a WHEN if you keep it plugged 24/7.
Also, mostly depend on postmarket is kernel drivers what will actually work over USB.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Are you using systemd or an alternative, what do you recommend?English
18·10 days agoOpenRC here, on Gentoo.
It works pretty well, fast and simple, honestly I never felt the need for SystemD.
I use the latter at work sometimes, I don’t really like how it changed the way stuff works, but I have nothing against it. I just feel the extra complexity is not needed in all of my home setups (laptops, servers, etc). So it’s OpenRC everywhere for me.

1·10 days agoI am using wiki. Is for a different project and I can’t say I really prefer it over dokuwiki. They both have good points. I don’t like the php dependency of dokuwiki but wikijs feels a bit overcomplex.

Ask Me Anything@lemmy.ca•I live in Italy (northern), AMAEnglish
2·11 days agoOk, so I have finally watched it, found by sailing the high seas.
So, I never watched family guy before and I am not so sure I like or appreciate the style.
Of course it depicts an italy that’s pretty stereotypical, but I think it fits well in the show “style”.
I know a few Americans (mostly woman) who moved to Italy and stayed, and they currently enjoy living here much more than in the US, but not for the glamour or the supposedly romanticism, which is absolutely a stereotypical build up. Just for the actual quality of life.
The only part I found offensive was the scene in school, with the big tits teacher. We actually have good schools and good teachers, and that was gratuitous and didn’t fit any stereotypes I could think of about Italy from an American point of view, so that felt a bit too much.
The rest, it’s ok, even the mafia part and the run down shaggy southern lifestyle, it’s fitting stereotypes, so o think it’s also funny given the type of show family guy is.
Overall didn’t enjoy much, but I guess I don’t lime the show much anyway, not because of italy.

For once, a positive UI change IMHO.
