The problem with tech is that you aren’t usually doing the thing that made you want to go into tech. For me this was creating things and solving interesting problems. Most of my days are meetings, dealing with clueless people and having to deal with leadership and product team changes that ruin already completed work. Thankfully being at large tech companies has enabled me to hopefully retire in my early 40s. I can then continue with tech in a way that is meaningful to me while also spending a lot more time outside. The PNW is beautiful and I intend to see much more of it .

Technology@lemmy.world•Oracle made a $300 billion bet on OpenAI. It's paying the price.English
2·4 months agoSame for me. I was directly responsible for automation of AI infrastructure builds. It was miserable and I felt terrible. I transferred out of that org but now I’m writing software using the tools created by our AI infra. I made a lot this year due to equity increase and maybe next year but I want to be out.
Thanks! Those do look nice.

I’m at 6x6 with 2 redundant but am approaching 17TB used with 1 drive in need of replacement. Do I need 6x20? No. Is that what I’ll probably get? Don’t judge me.

Why do you have “5 or 7” apps? Being able to communicate externally, with consistency, is the reason for email, that’s it. If anyone sends me an email with a question or comment that isn’t hyper specific I immediately tell them to go post in a relevant slack channel so others can search for the question/comment in the future.

Linux Phones@lemmy.ml•Liberux NEXX is a Linux smartphone with a RK3588S chip, 32GB RAM, and a 5G modem (crowdfunding)
7·1 year agoI backed the Librem 5 and waited years. I was somewhat disappointed at the delivery but understood that Purism was sticking to specific requirements and advancement of full open source phones. I imagine there will be less of a gap in hardware as projects happen so hopefully there’s a Linux native device for 1k with decent specs soon.

2·1 year agoWas just using that as an example. It would be great to see a Linux device with this capability. I have played around with a few Linux phones and convergence was a feature that received attention so I think there’s hope.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Mecha Comet is a modular Linux handheld coming soon to Kickstarter for $159 - Liliputing
4·1 year agoAgree. Sometimes I want a tablet, sometimes a laptop but I don’t need or want 2 separate devices of that size. I recall quite a few Android projects (Mirabook, Project Linda) that would use a phone with a laptop dock but I’d prefer a phone as a standalone device and a secondary, larger & more powerful, device that can have multiple forms.
Whoosh
789k was pay + severance for Katherine Maher who left in 2021. Now that does seem excessive, I don’t know how that number came about or why severance was 600k but the year before Katherine’s comp was 406k. The compensation for the current CEO is 534k for 2023 per https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/200049703
Of course that seems like a lot of money, and it is, but to put it in perspective, I am just another software engineer and I make more than that. In HCOL areas, at “big tech” it’s common for entry level SDEs with a BS to make 160-180k.
So as I stated in a different comment, your criticism seems misplaced. What you have a problem with is really the financial situation our society is dealing with, and that’s perfectly reasonable. I would 100% agree that current wealth/pay distribution needs to be addressed.
Why should non-profits not want to “rake in tons of cash” if it helps advance the mission of the non-profit?
The “essay” (for me) read more like a rant about the author’s opinions regarding hypothetical situations and how, in many people’s views, a successful non-profit spends money. Sure, maybe WMF could spend less but the table looked reasonable. I’ve donated before and I’m sure I will again because I use Wikipedia all the time. I am going to spend more time learning about the organization and its spending, but as of reading the linked material, I’m unmoved.
Also, I get that 789k is a lot of money. Really more than anyone needs but it’s hardly an absurd amount given the norms for CEO pay. Yes, CEO pay is ridiculous but so is the entire economy, speaking as a US citizen. I would have guessed higher and many non-profit CEOs make much more than 789k. Plenty of people, with less responsibility and impact, make more than that so that pay is not really a WMF specific point.

11·1 year agoI commented on someone who seemed to think that millennials wasn’t the correct generation because millennials must have grown up watching Seinfeld. Many did, but many didn’t. I know many people around my age that didn’t watch it so it’s fairly safe to assume that people who were 2-4 years old when the show ended might not have seen it, even re-runs. Remembering it and watching it enough to have an opinion on it are two different things.

I had the same “well technically” thought at first but destroying that much infrastructure will result in some immediate deaths and mass casualties later. So maybe not technically genocide but in reality it’s close.
