After not having a great time towards the end of highschool, I ended up spending most of my free time.between classes, in classes, and lunch, etc with the punk kids and the potheads. And they were some of the nicest and coolest fucking kids I’ve ever met. Super glad I had that experience because it definitely broke that propaganda fueled view I had of those two groups, for when i entered adulthood.

Been a while since I messed around with my server, but I feel like I set up the VM network NICs, as a bridge, br0, and then set up the host network as a bridge, br0, so my VM’s and host could all talk to each other. I wonder if your VM’s NICs are set up as NAT and its isolating the VM’s and connections?

As someone not part of the ADHD community and just stopping by from browsing, I gotta say: your health is your right. The only reason your wife should have any say in something like this is if it has in the past it put her in danger or caused significant issues with your marriage like: “well, last time you took your meds you had awful mood swings that were hard for me to understand and deal with”, or “last time you took your meds you almost got fired, putting our financial safety at risk”, etc. etc. If there is no history of something like this deeply affecting her, than your health is your right and you should get your meds if you and your doctor feel it would help.
Yah, I mean, thats true. I guess I was hoping the multi kernel thing would be more of a 1-time development effort that would work across phones, so once you got it set up it would help all phones accomplish the same thing. I’m not a kernel dev though so I have no idea in reality how this stuff actually works under the hood.
In the context of cell phones, it makes a lot of sense though, if you can pull it off. Android kernel for hardware support, mainline kernel for software support. Right now there’s very few phones that can run mainline linux and actually use the features people would expect from a phone, the rest use android kernels and hallium which gives good hardware support, but doesn’t support the software stack for gnome-mobile and all the ‘traditional’ linux software like flatpak apps, etc.
So you’re either stuck with a phone that doesn’t work to call, doesn’t have a working camera, etc, with mainline linux, or an android kernel that doesn’t a support the usual linux software stack and has to run something like ubuntu touch (ubports) which is great that it works, but because its ubuntu’s software stack and an android kernel, you can’t run things like gnome-mobile or other traditional linux software like flatpak apps like postmarketos can.
The main problem I’m finding is: ubuntu touch apps have to be specifically built for ubuntu touch, you can’t just grab a flatpak app like you can with postmarketos and a mainline kernel. So the app ecosystem is really lacking vs running a mainline kernel, but then of course your hardware won’t work like camera, volte, etc.
I just want a working linux phone that has access to the apps we’ve come to love, and I feel like running 2 kernels is the way to achieve that until we get more people mainlining hardware support for all the various cell phones.
Preemptively, one might question why someone would want traditional linux apps on a phone, but there’s a surprising amount of flatpak apps on flathub that are built with responsive design and scale fairly well to a phone screen/touch interface. So being able to use the same software you use on your desktop, on a phone is great!
What are your thoughts on this patch?
I’ve been wondering about this since I saw this patch get posted https://lwn.net/Articles/1038815/
If this is possible to run multiple kernels then I would think it would be the best approach postmarketos could take, yes it would be less secure because of the old outdated android kernel, but we could possibly have working phones then. Like you said, use the android kernel for hardware access and mainline linux kernel for software support. As it stands right now, fairphone 5 is close with mainline, but still doesn’t really have working cameras and volte still doesn’t work so no calling in the US.

He forgot to blame Biden and the democrats.
As someone who wants to learn how to sharpen knives, you got any resource that are a good beginning? Or any suggestions for a beginner’s stone?
I don’t need to get crazy with it, its less of a hobby and more of a utility need, all of my kitchen knives are now dangerously dull.

I’m confused by this comment, (and the up votes) OpenSnitch is the fully open source application. It even says so in the article.
“If I ever needed to track down which specific application is making suspicious outbound connections, I would turn to OpenSnitch, the fully open-source, community-driven application firewall for Linux. It is not as polished as the new Little Snitch port, but every line of its code is open for inspection and it does not ask for blind trust.”

Gotta keep that stock market moving.

The as-seen-on-tv products sometimes have good ideas but the execution is awful. Cheap materials or bad engineering/quality control, etc…
Almost like he doesn’t work for the American people, eh?

It depends on what kind of devices you’re using.
It’s my understanding that SIM cards in phones are just to tie an account and identity to your phone, for purposes of enforcing people to be paying customers for the phone/data services, and tracking your usage based on what level service you’re paying for and what you should receive (5GB of data monthly, unlimited texts, etc)
But if your phone doesn’t have a SIM card in it, its still connecting to cell towers for purposes of emergency dialing, and the phone itself can continue to be tracked by cell carriers based on what physical cell towers its connecting to, as you travel around. The cell phone modem itself can control and connect to networks independently of what the OS running on the phone tell it to do, its a self contained black box.
If you have something like a desktop or laptop, both Intel and AMD have “management engines” embedded in the CPU’s themselves that can take control of the device for purposes of shutting down, wiping, etc a company machine that has sensitive information or access on it, and has been reported stolen, not returned by an ex employee, etc. These management engines have direct access to the network stack and can phone home whenever a network connections is present, either from a WiFi network, physical Ethernet cable, or 4G/5G WWAN card.

If you have a device that is basically air gapped, no WiFi, no cellphone chip, no bluetooth, etc, than it’s still possible to exfiltrate information off the device, but the software running on the device would have to be programming to be searching for methods to do that. Your average device, unless it’s running malicious software, probably won’t be doing that.
The security conference DEFCON and other technical conferences are held every year at Vegas, I wonder if someone from DEFCON put it there, lol
I had messed around with Linux and failed for a while, as I was using dialup and was trying to get win modem drivers working under linux. Fast forward a few years later and I finally switched when i finally had broadband, and the concept a virtual machine was really becoming industry standard in late 2000’s, and I wanted to start experimenting with them, I hated trying to hunt down windows licenses for each VM I wanted to run, and I started messing around with Linux in VM’s as they were free. Thank Tux, I finally started running Ubuntu on my bare metal machines around Ubuntu 7.04 I think, my WiFi drivers “just worked” and it was magical.

I looked up the song and… Was not what I was expecting, lol. Reading them myself I assumed the band would rap the lyrics, in a rage against the machine style.
I think people are feeling like this because the awful people that enable and drag the rest of society into these messes, never learn. Sure once shit hits the fan and it affects them deeply they’ll be complaining and calling for heads to roll, but the second the rest of society fixes the messes they created, the second they get a comfortable life again, they return with the same attitudes that lead down the dark path to begin with. They just don’t learn. Only changing their views when it affects them personally and then immediately flipping back when life is good again.
