this body of work was born of a journey across the lands of the Wiradjuri, the Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan, the Barkindji, and the Wilyakali (September 2021). the album was developed and recorded on the lands of the Gadigal, the Bidjigal, and the Wangal (February 2024). we pay our respects to those beautiful countries, to their Elders past and present, and to all of their communities.

Their sovereignty has never been ceded nor extinguished.

mallee – the second album from the collaborative project of Freya Schack-Arnott (cello and nyckelharpa) and Ben Ward (double bass, synthesised microtonal keyboard) – emerges from ongoing experiments with radical tunings, spectral resonance and richly grained textures. drawing from site-specific improvisations, each track considers a different instrumentation and a distinct scordatura.
