In late 2005, we were considering stopping the label. It had done its thing. We'd released 18 discs made almost 100% from samples. Around that time, Girl Talk sent us his third album. It was at a different level. The glitchiness was gone, and layers of samples seamlessly spun one after another into a 42-minute magnus opus. We couldn't resist the thought of putting it out. With limited resources, we decided to promote it via a small NYC publicity company.

Night Ripper was well received. Some blogs covered it, and college radio played it. Almost 10 weeks after the release date, though, Pitchfork glowingly reviewed it and tagged it "Best New Music." The dynamics shifted immediately. Countless music publications followed, and it ultimately landed on numerous best-of-2006 lists.

With the hype, though, iTunes removed it, and NAIL Distribution's parent company, Allegro Music Group, dropped the CD after weeks of hand-wringing. It was too late, though, as we'd already ordered thousands of CDs to be replicated, and the album found its way to the larger fanbase through smaller distributors.

Night Ripper began the second phase of Illegal Art. With its success, we were able to expand our roster to include Steinski, People Like Us, Økapi, The Bran Flakes, Junk Culture, Touch People, and others.
