about

God Is In The CD 20th anniversary reissue is released on the 4th of September 2026 through Bandcamp. With a special digital edition, including six extra tracks, and a limited edition CD of the original release  pre-order here. godisinthetvzine.bandcamp.com/album/giitcd-20th-anniversary-edition

This November marks twenty years since the release of GOD IS IN THE CD (GIITCD), an Underground Compilation of UK music in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Today, we announce a reissue with a digital version featuring bonus tracks for £5 and a limited run of CDs available for £6. Funds raised from the digital reissue will go towards the hosting and redesign of GIITTV, with half of the funds raised from physical CD sales going to Macmillan Cancer Charity.

Released back in 2006, just three years after GIITTV was founded in Cardiff by editor Bill Cummings, GIITCD is an eighteen-track compilation of songs by underground, independent and unsigned artists and bands. Now twenty years on, we revisit the release, celebrating it as a time capsule of an era in music and a document of some of the below-the-mainstream artists we featured in our early years as a webzine.

GIITTV held three launch shows across the country featuring performances by artists on the release alongside some other acts we wished to highlight, including events at the Brixton Windmill and The Purple Turtle in London, and Chapter Arts centre in Cardiff.

GITTCD kicked off with the searing, original, street poetry of Leeds' Penny Broadhurst, then goes to the dance floor with The Swear's superbly ironic ‘Disco Bitch’ that twitches between sweetly angular verses and shouty riot grrrl influenced choruses, before diving down into your sub-consciousness with the sensitive and timeless indie of former Angular Records act Gifthorse the brainchild of songwriter Brian Bryden whose current band is called The Understudies.

GIITCD also featured Cardiff band Donde Stars anthemic single 'You Can Keep the Kids' with its soaring vocals and addictive alt-rock chorus its the intersection of Radiohead and James. The driving intensity of Edinburgh noise rock band Korova, London art rock band the Sailplanes, and the Northern soul-inspired Cardiff collective The Shake. The beguiling and introspective sound of former One Little Independent artist Rose Kemp. Plus Cardiff's The International Karate Plus, which featured former members of Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi , literate indie dandies Villette, the fuzzy bedroom pop of Birmingham’s Captain Polaroid, who is still active to this day, and New Cross heroes Rhesus.

The record pivoted on the building atmospherics of Nakeru's 'Long Walks on the Beach' which had something in common with the likes of Bloc Party's more expansive moments, and the dirty off the wall zoo rock sounds of Matt Finucane and The Empty Vessels' 'Sex Disco'. Before finishing strong with the country-tinged rocking of Gemma Ray Ritual, the experimentation of Small Town America favourites Akira, who we are told featured a member of Metronomy, and the uncompromising punk sound of Salvo.

The reissue features six extra tracks, including Time Space Repeat’s epic gaze-laden track ‘End of the World’ that was the debut GIITTV Singles Club release in 2007, when the free release was downloaded over 10,000 times.

It also includes other singles club releases, including the longing and luxurious bedroom electro-pop of ‘Selfish Bachelor’ from The Melting Ice Caps, the solo project of David Shah, the singer of Luxembourg, the yearning 'Boxing Day' from Richard Adderley (The Boyfriends)’s project Small Crew. While ‘Idiot Food’ is a state-of-the-industry address ladled with black irony and anti-folk deconstruction from Superman Revenge Squad the project of Ben Parker, also known for his bands Nosferatu D2, and My Best Unbeaten Brother. Ending with The Fades 'Missed the Point' and My First Radio’s anthemic ballad ‘Progress’ that’s spiralling riffing, strings and harmonies swell with wistfulness and into a crushing cry for change.

Thank you to all of the artists and musicians involved; the artwork is by Andy Hunt.

Since 2021, God Is In The TV Zines' offshoot label has released a series of covers compilations, collections of versions of songs by R.E.M., Kylie Minogue and The Cure reinterpreted by various artists, raising over £11,000 for the charities Mind, Macmillan and Help Musicians.
