I had a variety of poems with hardly anything in common other than the fact that I wrote them, so I felt I did not have the kind of theme or overarching plan that other books have to have. Then, I realized that my poems are indeed all of the same themes, because they are all of me. I am not always the same; why should my poetry be? I came up with a title, thought of the idea two have a microcosm part (poetry about my inner world) and a macrocosm part (poetry about the outer world). So, let me specify that I did not have any idea about my book until it was done. I feel like I was possessed for a few days and then my name was on a book. But, if I had to construct the idea of where it all started, I would say from my old poetry. I felt that I should just find a way to put it out there, and this was my way of doing what I felt was due diligence to myself. (less)

When I get writer's block, it does not mean I cannot write; in fact, it only means I feel that I cannot write well. Feeling disconnected to my own words makes me not want to write them. But, my best way of dealing with writer's block is letting go of the idea that what I write has to be good. This is when I just write stream of consciousness, whatever pops into this little head of mine. So, the way to deal with writer's block, for me, is to stop being so afraid of writer's block finding me. It can only find me if I feel that I always have to write a certain way. (less)

“The quiet regrowth of a forest,
fertilized only by its own burnt flesh,
is what I think of
when I think of survival.
When we are able to look death in the face
and prosper because of it, and not just despite it,
we prove that to live is to contradict.”
Belle Townsend

“I have heard that we are stupid for voting against our self interest,
and I know how hard it is to vote in my state.
I have heard that we are willfully uneducated,
and I have seen our artificially low property taxes
create our underfunded school system.
I have heard criticism from the experts,
but I have seen nothing but classism disguised
as neoliberal conjecture.
You cannot understand where I come from
if you are not also from there. I mean
that words fail
and nuance exists
and the enemy is never who we are taught to hate.”
Belle Townsend, Push and Pull

“I feel the overwhelming ache from surviving day after day in this
miserable system that looks like a miserable world.
To live is to feel everything, and to feel everything is to ask
for an unbearable existence.”
Belle Townsend, Push and Pull

“There is a trailer that I pass on the drive to my parents’ house in Robards,
and obstructing the dance of the overgrown weeds
is a Trump sign.
Last summer, another sign went up next to it.
The sign, handily made of cardboard and black marker, said,
“EXTRA FRUITS AND VEGGIES FROM GARDEN,
STOP BY AND GET YOU SOME.”

“You see, when you grow up
with a worldview shaped by the same ideas in
school, work, home, and everywhere else-
you are destined to be wrong when you go anywhere else.
We cannot find conclusions
on our own
when premises are
intentionally kept out of our reach.”
Belle Townsend, Push and Pull

“When we pretend that our social structures do not influence our inner lives,
we forego the truth that
what happens to one of us affects all of us.”
