| I just love Charlie Muffin. Sloppily dressed, problems with authority, larceny in his heart, loyalty to friends, hatred for enemies and superiors, an underestimated smarts. The central premise of these books is always engaging and feels authentic. Mu ...more | |

| Once upon a time Jews, Muslims, and Christians lived and worked together amicably (mostly)--for 700 years, 3 times the length (at present) of the American empire. It can be done!! All about Andalusia and Arab factions and the fall of Rome--which left ...more | |

| A psychedelic trip through Peru, featuring a burned-out loser who sometimes acts ethically and often has visions and a woman looking for her magician-brother. Jacobs evokes just how hard it is to live in Peru--for anyone, but especially, of course, f ...more | |

| Good read. A husband-and-wife duo, albeit divorced. He's burned out and out of favor. She's kind of a company woman. The beats come fast, as does the violence. Not a dumb book by any means. Interesting settings, for sure. ...more | |

| Engaging, readable, detailed. Blows away a lot of myths about Richard III, including the ones Shakespeare promulgated. Oddly enough, we wanted to govern cooperatively, but it didn't work out. To say the least. ...more | |

“They call each other ‘E.’ Elvis picks
wildflowers near the river and brings
them to Emily. She explains half-rhymes to him.
In heaven Emily wears her hair long, sports
Levis and western blouses with rhinestones.
Elvis is lean again, wears baggy trousers
and T-shirts, a letterman’s jacket from Tupelo High.
They take long walks and often hold hands.
She prefers they remain just friends. Forever.
Emily’s poems now contain naugahyde, Cadillacs,
Electricity, jets, TV, Little Richard and Richard
Nixon. The rock-a-billy rhythm makes her smile.
Elvis likes himself with style. This afternoon
he will play guitar and sing “I Taste A Liquor
Never Brewed” to the tune of “Love Me Tender.”
Emily will clap and harmonize. Alone
in their cabins later, they’ll listen to the river
and nap. They will not think of Amherst
or Las Vegas. They know why God made them
roommates. It’s because America
was their hometown. It’s because
God is a thing without
feathers. It’s because
God wears blue suede shoes.”

“Love is the voice under all silences, the hope which has no opposite in fear; the strength so strong mere force is feebleness: the truth more first than sun, more last than star...”
