So 2.5 for the GraphicAudio and 3 for the book. Murderbot itself is a fun MC, and the dialogue is entertaining, but I find the technical talk and plots to be generally … uninteresting / dull / tedious to read....more

This is the problem with standalones, especially short ones :/ Ultimately it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I can see why people liked it due to how it executes what it’s going for very well, but personally several aspects of the stylistic writing choices, character perspective, and book parameters didn’t align with my personal preferences. ...more

Oh boy. Maybe my expectations were too high coming off book 1 but man did I have issues with this one.
Let’s start with the good: Vis and the other core characters, by and large, are still entertaining to read about, with a few new additions I believe will be mainstays. The 2 new worlds in terms of world building are interesting in their variety and individual workings. There’s still some of that wit and humor and lower stake action.
Spoilers ahead! However … The biggest issue I had was the amount of fridging (when a character the MC cares about dies, mainly in order to advance the plot through affecting the MC). I hate the amount of fridging. Aequa dying seriously pissed me off, but the character deaths might actually not even be an issue because they’re all gonna be resurrected anyway :P So his multitudes of trauma was for nothing but trauma porn. This ties in with the next issue—that the series feels narrow in a way other epic fantasy series don’t feel, since everything’s from his POV, this felt all Vis oriented, the whole world’s context only mattered in terms of how it affected him, in a self important suffering main character not quite edgy but how much can I make the MC suffer kinda way. And as for Vis, while his Luceum and Obiteum counterparts went through character arcs and seemed to grow and move forward, by comparison his OG Res self seemed dumber / slower / less interesting, in large part because it took so long for him to get up to speed (even though he literally could’ve listened to Veridius from the start). So he seemed willfully ignorant but simultaneously the golden boy in every situation. As for the worlds, expanding into three definitely sacrificed emotional depth per individual world. It also affected the pacing in that it felt like we were seeing highlight reels / checking off story beats instead of naturally experiencing the entire story. There was no downtime, it was bam bam bam, in all three worlds. And because of that (and because of the frequent dying of any characters we get attached to, and the breakneck pace) I really couldn’t give a shit about the political machinations in either Res or Luceum. And to top it off, Islington AGAIN robbed us of answers to core questions, questions we’ve been wondering about since the start, at the very end of a long book. In a literal time skip past Ka’s explanation ...more
