Visiting Oakville Ridna Skhola for Holodomor Remembrance Day

Many thanks so educator extraordinaire Oksana Levytska, her team, and her fabulous students. It was a pleasure to discuss my books set during various times in Ukraine’s history, particularly my books set during the Holodomor, and my Kidnapped from Ukraine trilogy, which is set during a time these students are all too familiar with. It … Continue reading "Visiting Oakville Ridna Skhola for Holodomo Read more of this blog post »

“I wanted to live in a world where people were equal no matter who their parents were or where they were born. I wanted to live in a place where hard work and kindness were valued. Was that too much to ask for? I didn’t argue with Lev and Petro though. They also deserved the right to choose their own life.”

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”
Mark Twain

“Kat happened to get a spot in the cafeteria line-up just behind the young woman lawyer who presented the case against her grandfather. She had removed her black robe too, and Kat found her much less threatening in her cream coloured jacket and trousers. The woman grabbed a carton of milk and then a tossed salad from behind the Plexiglas door. "Stay clear of the noodle soup," she said to Kat pleasantly. "It's vile."

Kat smiled back at her. How odd that this woman could be so nice. It must all be in a day's work for her to tear apart and impoverish families. Kat grabbed some red Jell-O and a carton of orange juice for herself. She didn't really feel like eating: she was just going through the motions.”

Marsha Dear Jamie,
Alas, I cannot read and comment on your story but I can give you some advice. My biggest piece of advice is once you've written a story, let it sit for awhile (an hour, or even a day) and then go back and read it and think of ways that you could improve it. I do 60 or more revisions on every story that I write. Practice and revision make all the difference. Good wishes with your writing.
best
Marsha

Nice to hear from you, Kristin! Congrats on the new book and that's awesome about the painting!

Kristin Butcher Hi Marsha.
Hope all is well in your world. I haven't fallen off the face of the earth; just left the social network. (It's been a year and a half already.) It wasn't a a healthy fit for me. New book coming out next spring. In the meantime, I'm honing my painting skills. Who knows? Perhaps I can become an illustrator.
