about

The landscape of how culture evolves and is consumed in today’s age is marked by contradiction. In an era where nuance and context are increasingly flattened to accommodate the needs of a fragmented and distracted consumer, authentic and meaningful forms of cultural mixing have become comparatively rare. Mauritian, Paris-based artist GЯEG exists in contrast to that, with his latest EP “KAS FREKANS” embodying a hybridisation that feels organic and true. Splitting his time between his beloved Mauritius and Paris, his sound naturally exists between these places, creating new worlds by channeling influences from Shatta & Bouyon with Hyperpop, Electro, and modern bass innovations. It’s a sentiment reflected across both his productions and DJ sets: driven by his vision of club music, which gives an authentic voice to the combination of styles born from spending time in the in-betweens, moving minds & bodies in the process.

Exemplifying this, “KAS FREKANS”, a phrase in Mauritian Creole which translates to “Break the Frequencies”, opens with ‘Shatta 2’, an amalgamation of Shatta and Hyperpop, marking it as the first track of its kind. “bby” sees GЯEG take on UK bass pressure with a syncopated bounce that’s infectiously streamlined; however, the movement in the low-end delivers the winning blow, with a bassline fluidity akin to turn-of-the-century hit ‘Flat Beat’. Flipping the dial further and dropping the BPM down again, “Aun Do” shows us he isn’t just your typical club producer. Ever the unpredictable artist, here he recruits vocals from Naisha, whilst digging up the bones of Moombahton to concoct something of his own. Delivered with the distinct charisma she's known for, Naisha croons & rhymes over a futuristic-leaning Reggaeton/Dancehall instrumental, sporting co-production from none other than Skrillex & Dilip. For the title track “Kas Frekans”, GЯEG tag-teams with Mauritian Dancehall maximalist Dopeman, showing us a stripped-back approach that lets rhythm and bass do all the work. The sound design feels reminiscent of Dubstep just before it went global, while the rhythm fully embraces Shatta. Tying it all up, “Mardi” takes us for one more spin; it’s a Bouyon/Bubbling alloy with a sleek, anthemic vibe that’s primed for the hotter seasons.

The result is music that feels essential and culturally important in the current fraught landscape, all with one thing at its core: joy. It serves as a reminder of the power of music and its ability to bridge gaps between physical space, generations, and genres. GЯEG’s sound reminds us to explore and invest in where things come from, but also that a good time and a proper dance are just as vital.
