  • I agree like 70% but it extremly depends on where on Lemmy you are.

    E: And I partly definitely disagree:

    There is core limitations on Lemmy which cannot be fixed even on the long term( for example finding communities via search. Results from .world is very different from the result that your instance fetch, no ability to upload media with the same ease and speed of Reddit,…etc);

    Never had such problems. I can find all the communities I want to find. Most communities I can’t find are on instances defederated by my instance for really good reasons. Media upload speed? Depends on your internet I guess. And types of media… Yeah video-upload would be neat (even tough I don’t really need it), but Reddit had the same problem last time I used it and catbox.moe etc. aren’t that bad of alternatives. Also Lemmy is young, video-upload might be possible at some point, surely no problem which “cannot be fixed even on the long term”.

    Meanwhile here there is no modbox functionality which complicates talking with mods;

    … Just write them a DM? The few times I had to contact a mod this was the easy way to go.

    Some Lemmy users seem to be easy to obsessive over things.

    It’s the internet. There are people who are really into stuff, so what? It’s like Reddit on speed.

    On a side note it feels like a lot of Lemmy servers are suffering financially and might close soon, while Lemmy developers did not even try to help them by implementing third party upload functionality(Imgbox, catbox, imgur,…etc) in the app and the web front end to lighten the load on the server admins. Right now most Lemmy servers I know of are protected by Cloudflare and pictures uploaded on some servers don’t open natively(you need to click it as a normal link and pass cloudflare verification to see image).

    You do can upload media via catbox & Co. And I for my part can see most of the media, at least when I couldn’t it was due to the media being deleted. There might have been some cases of federation issues or stuff, but they really are seldom.

  • I guess it’s a mix of

    • Nostalgia (when using devices dating back to one’s youth/childhood)

    • Just liking old tech like some people like old trains, e.g. admiring the know-how needed (to create something like this even with the limited ressources of those days)

    • Having fun at futzing around with tech/electronics (aka. making/hardware-hacking) which can include liking to fix technical problems and creating something based on what others believed to be trash/unuseable
