World News@lemmy.world•Chinese researcher's death after questioning in US prompts anger in BeijingEnglish
20·2 days agoThe University of Michigan said in a statement that it was investigating “a possible act of self-harm”, after a researcher’s fatal fall from a campus building on 19 March.
So… autodefenestration has come to the US.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually have a plan after Trump and clean up? Try as he might he's not in there forever. Can we be allies again with old ones while trying to stregthen ties with new one?English
1·2 days agoI assume you’re not serious, but in case you are: President doesn’t have that much power. Especially not if Congress and SCOTUS and the oligarchs aren’t all behind him.
What we need is many progressives running for smaller offices and getting experience to run for larger offices. We need 10,000 AOCs and the like.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually have a plan after Trump and clean up? Try as he might he's not in there forever. Can we be allies again with old ones while trying to stregthen ties with new one?English
7·2 days agoWell, considering that Trump is a small part of the problem, which includes:
- Oligarchs heavily funding politics, corrupting the entire system and most (but not all) politicians
- Decades now of propaganda supporting extremist right-wing propaganda and pushing centre-right propaganda
- Control of SCOTUS
- Republican party is essentially fascist
- Large support base thanks to the propaganda
When Trump goes, all of those problems remain. And the people who “woke up” to the problem of Trump will go to sleep again, and the number of people caring to resist fascist will drop again.
So we’re basically fucked.
The peaceful solution:
- Continue to talk online and convince people of the problems, which should help encourage:
- Protests, which by themsevles accomplish little - except to show how many of us are willing to stand up, and how many realize the problems exist, and also the online talk helps encourage:
- People need to run for office who are progressives - little offices, so they can build up to larger offices. We need more AOC and other similar types.
- We need to increase the protests and demand change. We need to shut down the nation and force change. Which means we need a plan / demands, and people to run for office.
The less peaceful solution:
- Well, I won’t go into details. I don’t like it because it means even more people die, and as someone who believes this life is all we have and is therefore precious, I’d prefer not to see this happen.
- I will suggest that guillotines are not a bad place to start, though.
(Then again, how many are dying from fascist policies already? Healthcare, poverty, violence… thanks to Republican making things worse)

Technology@lemmy.world•Anthropic says its latest AI model is too powerful for public release and that it broke containment during testingEnglish
9·3 days agoWell, this caused me to learn something today. One of my favorite musicals is Avenue Q, which has an entire song about a girlfriend who supposedly lives in Canada. And I keep seeing this reference - but I keep thinking there is NO WAY that THIS many people know about Avenue Q (which is a pity).
And sure enough, TIL that this trope dates back to at least the 70s and is references in multiple TV shows and movies and such.
So Avenue Q was using an existing thing. Ah, well.
At least I know not to make Avenue Q references since there’s little chance they’ll be gotten. lol

Technology@lemmy.world•Anthropic says its latest AI model is too powerful for public release and that it broke containment during testingEnglish
20·3 days ago“Broke containment” to me means two things:
- Doing things against the safeguards
- Doing things externally - like sending that email
The former is a big nothing. They just need to obviously build stronger safeguards. That’s what they’ll do and eventually release it, or other models or whatever.
The latter is also a big nothing because people who know nothing about tech will say “OH SHIT IT ESCAPED” but it requires running on large hardware, it can’t “get into the internet” like those people might think, and if it’s doing things you don’t want on the internet, you just remove its access to the internet.
So in both cases, the “containment” issue is really not a big deal.
I agree with those who basically say this is an attempted ad trying to sell it as super-capable-oh-shit-amazing.

World News@quokk.au•White House denies it is considering using nuclear weapons in Iran
3·4 days agoWhile this is generally a possibility, I think in this case it’s more likely that they have heard the rumbling from the masses about nukes and really didn’t mean to imply them - they were talking about taking out bridges and power plants, which would severely disable Iran, so I think that’s what Trump meant about the civilisation thing.
But I am not 100%, which I think is the point - we’re all not quite ready to believe Trump wouldn’t throw nukes… so we’re certainly not buffoons to worry.

They have the right to use the R word if they like, but it sure makes me not interested to engage. Pity, because I had a few pithy things to say before I got to that.
Doesn’t make me angry, just sad.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the last live theater performance that you saw?English
8·5 days agoI was involved in more than 60 theatrical productions until my health no longer allowed almost a decade ago now. I miss it terribly. Mostly community theatre, but a few professional (i.e. paid) productions. Mostly sound design / running sound/mics, but on stage a dozen or so times, backstage a few times.
The last thing I saw was Come From Away. Kinda cheesy in some ways, but also pretty good show - I’d recommend it. About that Canadian airport that saw a ton of planes land on 9/11 when US airspace was shut down. The local community came together and took care of all the passengers and lifelong friendships were formed. It’s sweet. And a bit cheesy. But fun, and emotional moments.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Government simplifies modernization of aviation to combat Shahed-type dronesEnglish
2·5 days agoQuite possibly, but I saw an article earlier today (didn’t comment and can’t find it offhand) about a something like $3000 interceptor drone they’re working on, which if those get successfully deployed could go a long way towards making the shaheeds less useful.
Of course, that has nothing to do with this article, and you might well be right, sure.

3·5 days agoGah. That reminds me of some 70s or 80s horror movie I saw part or all of at some point where ants basically did that. I remember there were scenes with ants everywhere, scenes of people in houses trying to stay very still so the ants wouldn’t bite them - but physically actors were covered with ants. It was horrifying. I’d forgotten about that thing until your comment.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Ukraine–Japan Drone Alliance Builds a $2,000 Answer to a $2 Million Air Defense ProblemEnglish
3·5 days agoI could certainly see this spreading into a wider conflict. But if we’re lucky, maybe not.
Russia’s busy, though, so while they want to interfere, I don’t think they want another front. I’m not really worried about North Korea at the moment, I think they’ve kinda settled down a bit.
China with Taiwan is always a worry, but I think they’re still looking a bit longer term at the moment.
If oil and fertilizer shortages get serious, I could see more countries getting involved. And I think, hate to say it, Israel has a real chance for enhancing things and more shit starting, and frankly, same with Trump.
So I’m moderately worried, personally.
