  • This is a messy but interesting question to sort my thoughts on. First, I did date a non-binary person for a couple years and ended things on good terms. I’m AMAB, they’re AFAB on testosterone. I’ll admit I felt a little weird as their transition took effect over time with thicker leg hair and a peach fuzz mustache.

Second, I’ve considered myself a sex-positive asexual person since I learned the term, so I’m not certain I should be answering this. I’ve always been confused when someone is called hot, but I like the mental/emotional intimacy and physical touch of sex. I’ve come to realize recently that I’d probably be okay being intimate with a woman or feminine partner with a dick, but since I would like to have kids some day it wouldn’t really work for a romantic relationship.

Third, that partner has half-jokingly said that you have to be a little gay to date them, so I don’t know that any person that would date a non-binary person can call themself 100% straight, which means technically nobody should be answering this question at all :P

  • Ya, you’re not wrong about any of that. But you seriously think the differences are big enough to say that they are not similar enough to recommend one based on the other? I think PHM reads like a single plot thread pulled from Bobiverse and expanded into an entire book of it’s own, with all the extra depth and space to dig into the sci fi that comes with that.

  • How are they that different? Both involve an anti-social, witty, nerdy guy put in scenarios that demand he come up with an innovative solution that’s usually science or engineering based. And they’re in space. I just finished Project Hail Mary again last week and was consistently thinking about how it reminded me of Bobiverse in tone and character, and not just because of Ray Porter.

  • If you read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein that may give you an idea.

Otherwise, I attended Porcfest, the libertarian Porcupine Freedom Festival, back in 2016. Although it’s labeled libertarian, most folks I talked to discussed anarchy. One of the presentations I remember asserted that 8 is the optimal number of individuals in a decision making group. In his ideal anarchy individual people would assemble in groups of 8, who would then gather their groups or reps from their groups into a higher group of 8, and so on. Effectively higher level group decisions, if needed, would be made by a council that could be traced back to any individual.

I don’t know that that’s a good plan, but it may get your mind going on how to think about the topic.

  • I bet there is one for you! The problem is that every person is in a different place with their diet, physical, and mental health, so the one weird trick that works for one person may not work for someone else. It might not even work for the same person later in their life!

When I was younger my trick was to only eat when I’m hungry. I worked at a pizza place where I could make and eat food whenever it wasn’t busy, so I could eat earlier or later in the day depending on how hungry I was. That doesn’t work as well now that I’m in an office position and have to eat on a regular schedule.
