Even the local traffic cops have enough firepower to take down a village; the farce of a 2nd amendment does nothing against real tyranny, it’s just for meatheads to injure themselves or their loved ones and oppress minorities when they get scared. I’m in California; all my votes go blue and are meaningless on the national scale. No amount of standing in front of buildings or blocking roads will make a dent in the capitol overlords that own the levers of accountability.
I see it as bulk imaging goes through the ML, which flags things, orders additional more detailed targeted scans, and those elevate to radiologists.
Devil’s advocate…this is one of the few good opportunities for ML. If you train a model on a specific dataset with expert validation, this has the opportunity to save lives.
First, radiology isn’t one thing; different radiologists with different expertise looking at the same imaging can see different things. Second, there are not enough radiologists; my wife is an ER doctor who only does overnights and her hospital network has a central radiology center that reviews all films from all the hospitals, and it’s always backlogged and waiting on results impacts outcomes in a real way. Radiological ML models could change healthcare. Imagine a world where part of your annual preventative care you go and get a full body CT. The ML model can compare your CT with references in your demographics AND your prior years, and find changes/issues before they’re crises. That’s simply not an amount of data analysis that could be done by an army of radiologists, and has the opportunity to spot things like tumors or organ swelling way earlier. I get that the late stage capitalism reality is “they’ll use the data to farm money out of you” but from an actual technological standpoint, this could have real life-saving and improving implications for a lot of people and removes a huge bottleneck in healthcare.
It is bad and he needs to face consequences, but the headline made me think it was worse than it was. He was polite, and his team reacted stronger than he did. I wonder how much the suppression was his PR agency over him; when he was in the station and telling the officers he appreciated everything they do, that is as good as you can do in a situation like that. Drunk driving is inexcusable, but that is not a celebrity meltdown which is how it’s being shared in a lot of headlines.
FYI, the kiwix foundation makes offline versions of wikimedia resources (though at pretty wide intervals, depending on the site, annually) which you can download via torrent and browse with a ZIM viewer. Counterpoint. This line of thinking is what got me living under an ACTUAL fascist regime right now. People did purity testing with Harris on whatever issue, pick your poison (Gaza, police accountability, etc) and it moved the needle. How much will never be known, but a chunk of people spent so much time listening to talking heads and streamers that they decided to not vote for her. And now we have Trump, destabilizing the world, letting a guy with brain worms decide everyone’s health. Harris would have been the best option by far even if she was not perfect, but fixing good was always a better option than rejecting not-perfect. If framework goes away, good luck getting another right-to-repair first org to build hardware. There has never been a better time to make the point “stop purity testing things, acknowledge when things are the better option, and work to make them even better.” All this “us vs. them” and using language that paints anything as black or white moves the needle on people passively reading comments, and does actual harm. Living in a world without a grey area does actual harm.
Purity testing everything you use means you have to get off Lemmy, if you look at the statements from some of the core devs. It is no way to live and is pretty much incompatible with being on the internet. Framework is clearly doing more good than harm, and while no company is perfect or immune from critique, feedback from customers does more than knee-jerk comments from people with no stakes.
We steered the kids away from Minecraft YouTube, but I actually watch it myself. And I would say Mumbo is good if you have a kid that likes technical stuff and contraptions. Grian is good if you like pranks. BdoubleO100 is an absolute artist, and I think he’s my pick, especially his Hermitcraft Season 10 complete season. GoodTimesWiithScar gets into a lot of silly chaos. Hermitcraft gets a new world every season, and so, picking a hermit and watching a whole season of their content actually may be a fun family activity. I get a lot of inspiration from what they do.
We started with Win10 e-waste, and started with Ubuntu Mate. Java Minecraft was the trick. Got them motivated, reading, doing math. Then wanting to install mods taught them about the filesystem and such. Age 4 and 6, they both got on board and are now top tier computer users. Giving them access to gimp, inkscape, and tinkercad got them using it for art and 3d modelling to get involved in the 3d printer, and they use blockbench to make custom models…which you configure with json in a resource pack. They’re now 9 and 11 and are motivated to play on computers.
I really dislike this headline. A vulnerability was found, responsibly disclosed, and the vendor was responsive and is planning/pushing a fix. The headline drowns a successful mitigation in flowery language of controversy. The article also shows how this can happen on other vendor devices, but the headline here looks like just Framework messed up, when they’re the only vulnerable vendor with a fix in the pipeline (based on the info in the article). I really hate headline-bait journalism.
This, and he wanted connection from someone of his species, and the first officer of the one ship that can overcome the plot debuff happens to be that species, a species we barely see outside this plot…it’s writing so bad you can’t see the show through it. Emotional stories are appropriate, it’s why Troi was a bridge officer. But this show was constantly setting up unsolvable problems that could only be fixed by this one crew, which breaks immersion. Good trek doesn’t have 50 Galaxy or universe ending threats only fixable by plot-armored main characters, it has ship, person, and planet level threats giving you the space to appreciate the human story. Even DS9 kept the stories on missions while the thread of the war was just a hum with reasonable stakes.
Neo Launcher has development stagnation, but otherwise it’s very feature close and an influx of users might get more dev attention.

What do you suggest? I take pretty extreme “voting with your dollars” positions that have excluded me from a ton of social and family things. I have protested, taken days off work, marched, signed petitions. I’ve donated to progressive politicians, I’ve talked about what’s going on to apathetic people to the point where they don’t talk to me much anymore or ask to stop talking politics. Everything I’ve voted for has pretty much passed, and my representatives do the right things for the most part. I actively participate in a local network of people connecting resources to protect immigrants by hosting some services on my self-hosted network for people to organize on (I have personally sponsored meshtastic communicators and provided access to an anti-ice private channel).
I’m pretty tired of doing what feels like a huge amount of effort, only to be told I should be doing something different or more. I fought so hard against the right, that the flanking snark attacks from the left and the implication that I’m somehow complicit by not doing enough or the right thing are driving me towards apathy. I’m fucking exhausted.
