Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Will the AI boom ever 'cease' in the future?
41·19 days agoThe benefit is less about decentralization in this case (although it would be nice because fuck corporations, especially Ticketmaster) and more about the use of cryptography. The blockchain and non-fungible aspect allows people to buy tickets secondhand without a doubt in their mind that the tickets are fakes or copies, all without the need for a corpo-approved marketplace which make the rich leeches richer.

36·19 days agoNFTs actually do have a few practical uses, e.g. concert tickets, but the number is very small and the relevant industries are unlikely to adapt them anyways because capitalism

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In language classes, did you choose your name or get assigned one? Or use your regular name?
7·1 month agoSpanish: we got to choose, most people chose something close to their real name
Mandarin: my teacher’s Taiwanese wife painstakingly came up with names for us that were close-sounding, or at the very least had the same first letters. It was very cool of her to do

Speaking for the US: I have met several pro-ICE Latinos who either immigrated here themselves or their parents immigrated.
Essentially, they immigrated the “legitimate” way and bought into the MAGA narrative that there’s loads of criminals crossing the border illegally and coming here to live off welfare without paying taxes. They believe that since they came here the “correct” way, others should do the same and the ones that don’t should be violently deported

28·3 months agoYour comment makes it sound like “we” are a bunch of aristocrats who force people to play football against their will for our own entertainment.
They’re all playing of their own volition and are well aware of the risks. When you watch or read documentaries about players, they’re all extremely passionate about the game. It’s just like the guy from the free solo movie, or any other participant in extreme sports… they’re well aware that they’re doing unnecessarily risky things but they just can’t emotionally pull themselves away. The human mind can be that irrational sometimes.
Nobody said you have to like football but comments like yours are just unproductive and mean, especially for a science sub

5·3 months agoI currently use a Pi 4 as a torrent box. The hard drives used to be hooked up to it using a powered USB3 hard drive bay but now they sit in a separate NAS, so the pi is just for running the torrent software.
The only important thing I have to note is I had to limit the total number of connections in the qbittorrent settings (to I think 75?) or else the system would run out of memory while seeding public torrents that were new and in demand. Works great tho
