Having seen the show should give you most of the context you need for the novellas, though some characters will be different.
No context might be difficult, but I think they catch you up on the broader concepts as they come up.

In the calmest of times submarines have poor connectivity with the outside world, so there’s no telling what they’ve been told.

Maybe the Illuminati gave him the information!

The use of generational demonyms annoys me, too, because it’s such a broad brush that has only become broader with time. In reality baby boomers should probably only refer to people born in the US in the immediate aftermath of WWII, but practically it includes people born well into the '60s.
A 20-year span is too long for meaningful grouping; a 40-year-old in the same “generation” as a 20-year-old is crazy.

Unless there’s some Tourette syndrome going on I don’t see why anyone should have to tolerate hateful speech.
I read the books first, but I thought the show did a great job of capturing the feel and the story beats with only minor character rearrangement. I believe I read that the authors (they’re a duo who originally wanted to make a space board game, I think?) rewrote and combined some characters from the show, so nothing seemed really out of place in either retelling
Not only are there 9 books, but there are also novellas in between that give extra context if you’re interested, but they’re definitely not required.
I started by picking a lot of indexers, trying to cover my bases, but every search would take forever because it sifts through every match to find the best one for your criteria. In the end I pared it down to just to just a couple big ones that even I’ve heard of and it’s been fine 98% of the time.
I’ve always heard the private indexers are best, but I don’t have experience with them.
Wow, you do seem trustworthy! Same late 90s/early 2000s timeframe?
Spelling was one of the few bits of information you could get about a person without them directly telling you, so it’s interesting that even a “face” is enough in those circumstances.
The standards were different back then

Yeah, if I wanted to see what’s happening on reddit I would just be there instead

Looks like it’s commercially available, created by Fredrik Eden https://www.amazon.com/lord-rings-aliens-print-fredrik/dp/b07bbhb7nm

I assume it’s UK/EU’s expanding social media laws that are driving this, in addition to Discord’s imminent Initial Public Offering coming in March. They’re trying to clean house to show how profitable they can be, the same way Reddit created their walled garden by restricting third-party connections prior to their IPO.
It’s bog-standard enshittification to please the shareholders.

I can’t tell if this is a big deal or not, can somebody translate?
Last time this happened they got excommunicated but then subsequently un-excommunicated? That’s unusual, right?

And -40°F!
People be like, “I love pizza,” after having a couple of slices for dinner. No. Eat 10 pizzas. Let’s see.
I’m not gonna give up either way

No empathy for grieving parents? Maybe I’m just getting old.
