With ABIZZZMO, Tony Gallardo — the mercurial Mexican musician behind María y José and a dozen other cult monikers — unveils his most personal and strangely beautiful project yet. Under the name ANSIEDAD1000, Gallardo trades reggaeton mutations and noise-cumbia experiments for a widescreen indie pop vision: anxious, psychedelic, and unexpectedly tender.

ABIZZZMO has the sweep and ambition of classic pop statements, a fractured cousin to The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, but it filters that emotional largesse through shoegaze distortion, lo-fi haze, and the restless experimentalism of early Anticon Records. Saturated guitars blur into neon synth textures, voices smear and dissolve, and everything feels suspended between intimacy and overload.

Gallardo has long been one of Mexico’s great pop outsiders, a figure who thrives on tearing apart genre from the inside out. But here, he seems less interested in parody or provocation and more invested in building a world of fragile grandeur. The songs on ABIZZZMO don’t unfold as anthems so much as atmospheres: bittersweet melodies surfacing through fuzz, confessions buried in reverb, rhythms that stumble more than they strut. It’s pop music as anxious dreamscape, at once lush and unsettled.

For fans of Animal Collective, My Bloody Valentine, Boards of Canada and Control Machete, ABIZZZMO reads as a missing link — a deeply idiosyncratic but strangely universal album that embraces contradiction: noisy and tender, psychedelic and melancholy, personal and mythic. Gallardo has spent over a decade twisting Latin American underground sounds into cult artifacts; with ABIZZZMO, he finally gives us an indie pop masterpiece that belongs in conversation with the great outsider classics.
