  • I guess it depends how you define it. I just don't think you can say "they're not Catholic", or even "they're more evangelical than Catholic" because the truth is the Catholic community has incredibly diverse politics, and depending on where you live it's going to mean different things. Where I live for example, if someone identifies as Catholic they are 100% a fascist. But then if you live in an anglo country it's all liberation theology and the IRA.

I think a lot of it has to do with opus tbh — and the truth is that the Vatican has been very hesitant to deal with them because 'trad' caths are an influential (and numerous!) part of the community that they don't want to lose in a rupture. Also, I suppose it's helpful to have some ultras to do your dirty work for you while you keep your hands clean. They're definitely part of the church, is what I'm saying, and I apologize for perhaps being prickly about the topic but I feel like I'm constantly seeing online leftists implying that things would be different if only the anglos would come back to Rome, when the reality is that the prots/catholics are the bad guys when they have institutional power — there's no theological basis to it
