The economic mobility thing is just meritocracy BS. They imagine that smart poor people will get rich, dumb rich kids will lose their money, and eventually everyone will settle into the class that they "deserve" to be in. It's why libs are so two-faced when trying to help disadvantaged groups - only socialists explicitly reject the logic that social and economic classes should exist at all, libs and conservatives both believe that their own group should be on top.

It's better than its been, but it still lags behind Windows. It's like 80% plug and play, 15% can-work-if-you-fiddle-with-it, and 5% doesn't work. That's the real reason it hasn't taken off, IMO - people won't switch devices unless you give them a compelling reason, and all of the compelling reasons to switch to Linux are things the average user really doesn't care about.

askchapo•If the "Saddam has WMDs and is working with Al-Qaeda" claim was made today, do you think more or less people in the west would believe it compared to 2003?
·3 years agoOn the other hand, I think a larger proportion of people would refuse to believe it purely on partisan lines. So if Biden tried to sell the world on Iraqi WMDs, the Republicans would all refuse to believe it and younger right wingers would call Saddam based for fighting Iran that one time - and if Trump did it then the libs would take the position that he was obviously lying. In neither case would the opinion of the American people affect the actions of the government.
You know, I recognize that these things are technically superior controllers for fighting games, but you'll never convert me to using them because they're so unaesthetic.

askchapo•When have you left someone speechless in person during a political discussion?
·3 years agoI remember once a few years ago I told one of my mom's lib friends I was a communist after talking to her about recent events for over an hour. She literally froze, mouth agape, at me, for about five seconds - and then started trying to tell me I couldn't actually be a commie because Trump was the most communist candidate and I had been bashing on him. Further proof that for a lot of American normies "communism" and "dictatorship" are basically synonyms.

·3 years agoThe more I've learned about it, the more I've been convinced that China's Whole Process People's Democracy is the current world benchmark for democratic control of a state. Voting in candidates should just be one action in a constant process of polling the people for what they want or need and implementing those things, and if that system is comprehensive enough then the specific voting system you use for representatives is almost an irrelevant detail.

news•Johnson & Johnson is openly planning to murder 6 million people over the next four years (good post by well-meaning liberal John Green)
·3 years agoTrue 6mil was just Jewish victims, and even 11mil leaves out the millions killed in the "holocaust of bullets" carried out by the German Army on the eastern front..

·3 years agoThe real reason libs don't like us is that we get into dungeons instantly and they have to wait even during peak hours.
One of the millions of Ukranians in the Red Army who fought against the Nazis

Compared to them, the Banderites and other collaborators are barely a statistical blip.
God damnit, Linux is too mainstream now. Time to switch to FreeBSD.
Then again, all of the cartoons for DC are great, but all of the movies for DC are awful, so maybe an anime is the way to go.

·3 years agoScientists estimate this will lead to 6 million more people dying of tuberculosis over the next four years
That's literally an entire Holocaust. It's not like I'm surprised but god damn the only difference between the 20th century fascists and modern western countries is that we have the thinnest veneer of deniability between us and the murders.

If you fail, you just get a bit about how what you want is impossible.
If you succeed, you get a fork where ChatGPT actually manages to write something really coherent and meaningful - and then in a future conversation you get served a notice that you're being sued for plagiarism.

·3 years agoI also love how those comments are all talking about voting styles as though that will be the thing that fixes western democracy. I got caught up in that particular bit of wonkery for a long time too, feels nostalgic.
I think there's something inherently awful about being in traffic that can make people go temporarily insane - but getting out of your car seems like you're inviting the person you're beefing with to run you over, so that's an especially bad idea.
Yes and even if it didn't if you lived in a good enough area for it it would also reduce your own utility bills which is nice - but of course the biggest polluters by far are things we can't even touch through individual action, like the military, oil drilling etc.
The way she's doing multiple things at once reminds me of "sludge content", the TikTok trend where you have multiple videos on screen at once in order to maximize engagement in the most ADHD way possible.

technology•My phone died a sudden and very final death, what are some good phones to get?
·3 years agoI've used a Google phone for the last couple that I've bought and been pretty happy with it, a last-generation one would still be really slick and pretty cheap but the flagship ones are great. I really wish there was a full-keyboard phone like the old Motorola Droids, which remains my favorite phone form factor ever, but sadly all of the options out there are either ancient, really sketchy quality, or big enough to be a small laptop.

So I've been watching through Metalocalypse lately, I love this show but god damn does the writing drop off a cliff in season four. It does the thing that some shows do that absolutely drives me crazy where they've sped up all of the dialogue slightly and edited out the air in between sentences - it feels like watching a youtube video at double speed and it sucks. Until this point the show knew how to use a bit of silence to build tension, help a joke land, or establish a scene, but it seems that when they got squished back into the 12 minute format they had forgotten how to pace an episode of that length.
