We’re delighted to welcome maps and diagrams back to the label with 'returning light', a deeply organic, thoughtful and melodic collection of patient electronics, softened textures and wonderfully intricate detail. Warm, spacious and quietly uplifting, it feels like perfect summer music.

Earlier this year we finally released 'tone isolation', Tim Martin’s first album for Home Normal, following the two beautiful maps and diagrams works we released through our sister label Nomadic Kids Republic fifteen years ago. Having waited so long to welcome Tim properly to Home Normal, it feels especially meaningful to continue that relationship only a few months later with this wonderful new work.

Across its eleven pieces, 'returning light' moves with a gentle sense of discovery. Small melodic forms emerge through hazy electronic surfaces, rhythms appear and quietly recede, and each sound is allowed the time and space to reveal its own particular character. The music feels detailed without becoming crowded, balancing a subtle sense of movement with the stillness and patience that have long defined Tim’s work.

The track titles trace a changing landscape, carrying a sense of return, home and contentment within these surroundings. Their imagery feels perfectly matched to an album concerned with gradual changes in colour, distance and atmosphere. Nothing arrives suddenly; instead, each piece seems to brighten from within, revealing new details with every listen.

There is warmth throughout but also a beautiful sense of uncertainty. Familiar tones hover at the edge of recognition, melodies feel half-remembered, and moments of quiet imperfection highlight the music's intimate human presence. As with so much of maps and diagrams’ work, the emotional weight comes not from grand gestures, but from the smallest shifts in texture, repetition and tone, and from the intricacies of the wonderful melodies at play.

'returning light' feels like both a continuation and a subtle opening-out: music rooted in Tim’s unmistakable universe of sound, yet filled with fresh space, colour and possibility. It is a tender, deeply felt album, and we are incredibly happy to share it as the next chapter in our long friendship with Tim.

'returning light' will be released through Home Normal on September 4th, 2026.
